Remember, Miami is where the local witchdocs will sacrifice live animals on the steps of the courthouse in order to bring good luck to defendants that hire them.  Or in front of businesses that they are cursing.   There are some nasty shitty areas in Miami.  When people think of Miami, the image that pops into their heads is the opening clip from the old Miami Vice show.  That isn't Miami.   That is South Beach and even then, it is only about 5 blocks of area that is worth going for.

I worked down there in MIA for 3 years. Carried all the time. One time, I was driving with my boss and there was a dead rooster in the middle of the road, he banged a u-turn fast and got outta there. When I asked him why, he said "the chicken was some Santaria bullshit and its best to get out of there"

Dude it's not what people think.  They think all white soft sandy beaches, beautiful girls in bikinis, hot rocking clubs, people in the latest fashions hanging out on the sidewalk cafes "living the life".  It is.  But only for 5 blocks.  Even in the South Beach area, the "beautiful" people don't live there.  The ones that come to your mind live out in Key Biscayne or the Isles.  The people that do live in South Beach are generally poverty level Cubans that live in a tiny shoebox size apartments about 500sq that were built in the 40s-70s and the only reason the roach infested buildings haven't been torn down is because of their "art deco" historical appeal.  The only Bentleys and Lambos you see down there nowdays don't belong to the elite and famous, they belong to the good for nothing kids of the Columbian mafia dons who control the clubbing industry down there.  Whose only accomplishment in life is that their daddy accidentally squirted them into a whores twat.  And now wants them out of the house and out of their hair no matter how much it costs.

Once you get outside of the South Beach area, the contrast is much deeper.  And more alarming.  You will see the latest hottest bomb-est club there, a block from the interstate underpass.  Line of people in the hundreds waiting outside all night to get in past the velvet rope.  Wearing the latest in dress and jewelry.  These aren't kids that are just waiting for a good time, they are the "in" crowd that moves the night scene down here.  These are the people that are waiting in line for so long they have to call their dealer to come make a delivery.  And when he rolls up to the sidewalk they have to bribe someone to run pay him and bring back their "snack" because they don't want to step out of line and lose their place.  Where do they get someone to do this for them?  Well....

Directly across the street.  (which is only one lane each way) is an empty lot where you will have 40-60 homeless people camping out.  Sleeping bags, card board boxes, stolen shopping buggys filled with their life's worth of belongs, etc...  One side of the street you got people wearing over $100,000 in clothes and jewelry.  On the other side of the street people without shoes and socks.

Come to Miami for a weekend and you will never want to come back.

That just shit all over my Miami stereotype.

I guess not just the Miami Vice stuff, but because we've always had good experiences in FL at Orlando, Daytona, Cocoa Beach, Clearwater.  We just kinda thought Miami would be a good place to visit.

That's nuts  :o  Interesting read, thanks!  Completely different than I pictured.

I always wondered why every single person I've ever talked to goes to the Sarasota area on vacation, or maybe Orlando but you rarely hear of anyone from the Midwest going on vacation to Miami.

Those are "whitey areas".  Northern Florida and the Gulf Coast are all high white areas.  Yeah you get some white trash around the Panama City, Daytona, Jacksonville area... but that beats the mongrels in Miami.   Think of it like this... Chinese restaurants owned by Cubans.  That makes sense?  No.  Welcome to Miami.

The only good thing about Miami is that it is 30 south of Ft Lauderdale and 2.5 hours north of Key West.  Other than that there is no redeeming factor.  When Versace was killled so was the vibe of the city.  All the aspiring models/actresses that you could bang after buying one drink disappeared.  All the European "superstars" no longer visit.   I am 29 now and back then when I was 14 and 15 my family would come to Ft Lauderdale and my sister and I would drive down to South Beach and just simply walk up and down Collins Ave for 5 blocks and within half an hour we would both have gotten invited to at least half a dozen parties.  Imagine walking into a party where the foyer table had a mountain of coke and the cover model of Vogue and Vanity Fair was tooting a line.  Know the porn star Jamie Gillis?  When I was 14 I saw him pouring poppers into a dust mask, putting it on and laying back to get a blow job by whoever passed by.  Didn't matter if it was male or female.  Probably wouldn't have cared if it was an animal as bombed out as he was.

Now days if you get invited to a party from someone approaching you on Collins or Washington, you are about to get a train pulled on you after they roofie your ass (pun - but literally).    When you meet someone that says they "own their own business" in South Beach, that means they are protected drug dealer for a certain club.  And once the club finds another dealer willing to give them a bigger cut of the sales taking place in the biz, they will be out on their asses.

You can still go to South Beach and have a nice time.  You will see beautiful people.  Have exotic drinks.  Pick up herpes (if single) from the ho's or (if married) crabs at the minimum from the dirty ass hotels there. Hit the casinos a bit north, go to the horse races, have really fantastic food.  But if you are watching shows like Dexter, CSI Miami, or Burn Notice and think Miami is all brand new high rises and clean area... well that is filmed in North Miami, right below Aventura.

Just because a city has shitty parts doesn't mean the citizens should be subjected to military helicopters flying above firing blanks along with military and police going nuts all over the place.  Don't think that's a very good idea even if they did announce it on the news before hand.

Seriously. My question, is what operations are they training/preparing for?

They did it in St. Louis last year.  Check out the two clods the media found to put on the air @1:10 who think it's great because in other countries,"they don't have police officers, they have troops" and it will "slow down the crime rate"  wow...

No, I don't think it's a smart idea given the increased opportunity for civilians to get hurt or killed.

But the Miami stuff is fascinating.  At least I know we won't be trying to visit anytime soon, lol.

What's mentioned above about Miami can be said about many cities in America but we still visit them.  Just don't do stupid shit you shouldn't at times you shouldn't in places you shouldn't and you'll probably be ok. ;D

Miami is 17th down the list in the top 25 most dangerous.
