serious question.. what happens if you take a very bad tackle as a College player and end up in a wheelchair, who will look after you? are you insured by the college ?

Since 2005, the NCAA has required universities to certify that athletes have insurance for athletically-related injuries before they can compete. The insurance can come from the school, a parent or an athlete's personal policy, and must cover up to the $90,000 deductible of the NCAA catastrophic injury insurance program.

The NCAA says its requirement protects athletes from substantial, unexpected medical expenses and eliminates misconceptions about the university's responsibility. It also protects schools from lawsuits because covered athletes are less likely to sue when expenses are paid by some form of insurance, the NCAA says.

Even some critics of the NCAA say that medical coverage seems to have improved for athletes in recent years. Some athletics departments accept significant responsibility for medical claims. But others assume far less, sometimes causing confusion and frustration for athletes.

In one case, an ex-Ohio University football player told The New York Times in 2009 that he learned he owed $1,800 in unpaid medical bills from his temporary paralysis when he tried to buy a car six years after the injury.

The great unknown is how many ex-athletes are footing bills to treat significant injuries sustained while in college.

"It's hard to know how many players are being hit with big bills," said Ramogi Huma, president of the National College Players Association, an advocacy group for college athletes. Because of potential loopholes in some schools' policies, "the bottom line is schools are not on the hook for one penny. I don't think players know what to expect."

If it wasn't for football, who would even mention cities like Green Bay, Jacksonville, Inidanapolis or Oakland?

Add Cleveland to the list. Wait a minute... People still don't mention that shit hole

If he had a son, clearly he'd steer him towards Basketball, as he's an avid fan---watch for his picks during march madness.
I'm guessing his son would be a point guard or small fwd?

I had a neighbor that was raised by his mother and 2 sister, the father and son were kinda pussies

Both the father and son remind me a lot of Obama

Obama could be my neighbor

I had a few injuries as has almost anyone that has played contact football, from a conclusion, torn acl, separated shoulder,  my younger brother broke his leg freshman year.

I would never ever regret playing football , the lessons an fun times I had playing football I would do it a million lifetimes over

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/president-obama-had-son-d-think-long-hard-150248874--nfl.html

President Obama: ‘If I had a son, I’d have to think long and hard before I let him play football’

The long-term impact of repeated collisions on the skull, health and psyche of NFL players has become one of the sport's paramount concerns, with lawsuits and allegations flying. Now, the nation's First Football Fan has weighed in ... and he's expressing some trepidation about the game's future. In a wide-ranging interview on violence with The New Republic, President Obama touched on the culture of sanctioned (and potentially damaging) violence in football:

I'm a big football fan, but I have to tell you if I had a son, I'd have to think long and hard before I let him play football. And I think that those of us who love the sport are going to have to wrestle with the fact that it will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence. In some cases, that may make it a little bit less exciting, but it will be a whole lot better for the players, and those of us who are fans maybe won't have to examine our consciences quite as much.

I tend to be more worried about college players than NFL players in the sense that the NFL players have a union, they're grown men, they can make some of these decisions on their own, and most of them are well-compensated for the violence they do to their bodies. You read some of these stories about college players who undergo some of these same problems with concussions and so forth and then have nothing to fall back on. That's something that I'd like to see the NCAA think about.

Conspiracy theorists are no doubt going to scream that THE PRESIDENT'S ALREADY TAKIN' OUR GUNS AND NOW HE'S COMIN' FOR OUR FOOTBALL TOO!!!!, but make sure you read his word choice closely: Football "will probably change gradually to try to reduce some of the violence," not "we have to change football." Hey, even the president doesn't pick fights with the NFL.

Obama will have a broad, football-rabid pulpit for his views next week. As is tradition, CBS News' Scott Pelley will interview the president before the Super Bowl. It'll be interesting to see if, on football's national holiday, Pelley will ask, or Obama will discuss, an issue that does not sync with the culture of football as it's existed for decades.

fair points... i don't regret playing ball for all those years... but i might if i lose my mind due to the 2 concussions i had

The chances of that happening are very low...
