This guy made a camera that had a system of mirrors/prisms that split the scene being photographed into the three primary colors: Blue, green, red and recorded them onto three black and white photo plates. After the plates were developed you had the colors recorded as three black and white separations, blue, green, red. The processor would then print the negatives onto photo paper that was each tinted the proper color. He would then soak each positive separation in a chemical that would lift the layer from the paper that contained the separate colored images. In a tray of water he would then align the lifted image from each colored positive with each other and glue them onto a blank sheet of paper to make the final print. Interestingly because these photos are based on black and white negatives where the image is made of metallic silver, the negatives will never fade.
Color movies in Hollywood from the 1930's to the 1950's were made with a similar process called Technicolor.
This was essentially the way color photos were made until the mid to late 1930's when Kodachrome in the US and Anscocolor in Germany were developed. These films record the separate colors on three separate layers on one frame of film.

Back then the process for these early colour photos took a lot of work to pull off with each color being developed seperately. There's a niche market for people that still work today in these early processes. good post.

Was this before the communists? What happened to them?
Before. when communist revolution was advancing, they captivated all of them. They were shot dead by communists in city of Yekaterinburg. "In the early hours of July 17, 1918, the former imperial family, Tsar Nicholas Alexandrovich, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, Grand Duchess Olga, Grand Duchess Tatiana, Grand Duchess Maria, Grand Duchess Anastasia and Tsarevich Alexei were taken to the cellar of the Ipatiev House and murdered" At the exact location of execution of Nicholas II is today a "Church on Blood in Honour of All Saints Resplendent in the Russian Land" built in 90's after communism fell.
