 My kids will be provided for regardless of path.

So..I ask..do I play it safe and be always -- perpetually questioning---if I could've done better?

Or do I go out and actually SEE if I could've done better..and maybe the answer is no.

I think what you are seeking is assurance that the alternative path you wish to take is not too risk averse (i.e. you are asking 'I want to take path B, tell me getbig am I fucking shit up immensely or not?'). Only someone with adequate knowledge of your situation, and the other variables that play into it can give you good advice.
