The Military's Deadliest Sniper Ever Was Just Shot Point Blank Right Here At Home

Robert Johnson

Chris Kyle was the most wanted man in Iraq a few short years ago and carried a bounty on his head only to die today at a Dallas shooting range.

WFAA Dallas reports Kyle was at the range with a neighbor. The news is still unfolding, but apparently Kyle was shot point blank and his neighbor suffered wounds that also proved fatal.

Jessica Stanton at The Daily Caller dug this up:

The Empire Tribune in Stephenville, Texas reports that the suspect, Eddie Ray Routh, was captured in the town of Lancaster around 9:00 p.m. Law enforcement officials believe Routh is a “highly trained individual with military experience.”

Jack Murphy at the Special Operations Forces Situation Report (SOFREP) published a post regarding the tragic murders on Saturday night, reading in part: “Chris had been volunteering his time to help Marine Corps veterans suffering from PTSD and mentoring them.  Part of this process involved taking these veterans to the range where one of them snapped and killed Chris and his neighbor for reasons that remain unknown at this time.  The perpetrator then stole Chris’ vehicle in an attempt to escape but we have received word that the police have arrested him.”

During his 10-year stint as a Navy SEAL sniper, Chris Kyle was in every major battle of the Iraq war and was so effective at killing Iraqis that they called him "The Devil Of Ramadi" while placing an $80,000 bounty on his head.

Kyle spoke last year to Gary Buiso at the NY Post about his book "American Sniper," and offered a few details about what life was like as his sniper skills grew.

At 225 confirmed kills, his fellow SEAL Team 3 members called him "The Legend" and picked the comic book character The Punisher as their platoon's mascot.

His first kill was a woman about to throw a hand-grenade at a group of Marines. His most distant kill was from 2,100 yards away outside Sadr City in 2008.

It was there he saw a man leveling a rocket launcher at an Army convoy and fired a single round from his .338 Lapua Magnum rifle with its Nightforce power scope.

From that distance, Kyle had to factor in terrain, wind, elevation, vibration from the shot, and even the Coriolis effect where the rotation of the earth affects where the bullet arrives.

On that day each of these factors conspired together and Kyle hit the man before he attacked the convoy. “God blew that bullet and hit him,” he told The Post.

These days Kyle's the president of Craft International a veteran owned company offering special operations training. Like many servicemembers, he left the military to preserve his marriage.

Ed. Note: RIP Chris

Chris Kyle, a former Navy SEAL who became known as the deadliest U.S. sniper, was one of two men murdered on Saturday afternoon at a gun range in Erath County. Police have a suspect in custody.

Three sources confirmed to News 8 that Kyle — who served in every major battle during Operation Iraqi Freedom — was shot dead at a gun range at Rough Creek Lodge, 53 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

The second victim was identified early Sunday morning as 35-year-old Chad Littlefield of Midlothian.

Eddie Routh, 25, is in custody in connection with the shootings.

Investigators said Routh, a former Marine who is said to suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome, is believed to have turned his weapon on Kyle and the second victim, killing them both at point-blank range about 3:30 p.m.

An alert was issued for Routh, who was later captured after a short pursuit in Lancaster, south of Dallas.

Routh is an expert marksman, according to law enforcement sources.

Since retiring as a Navy SEAL, Kyle had been actively helping other military veterans recover from PTSD.

"My heart is breaking," said Travis Cox, director of FITCO Cares Foundation, in a statement early Sunday morning. Kyle helped found the organization to help treat veterans who suffer from PTSD.

"Our foundation, FITCO Cares, this country and most importantly, his wife Taya and their children, lost a dedicated father and husband, a lifelong patriot and an American hero," Cox continued.

He hailed Kyle as a hero and said "Chris died doing what he filled his heart with passion – serving soldiers struggling with the fight to overcome PTSD."

While serving in Iraq, insurgents placed a bounty on Kyle's head because of his lethal accuracy as a sniper. He recounted his experiences in "American Sniper," published last year. It details Kyle's sniper days killing insurgents from 1999 to 2009.

The book's cover refers to Kyle as "the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history," with 160 confirmed kills.

Kyle, 38, was born in Odessa, Texas and was using a rifle at the age of 8, according to his book.

He served four tours of duty in Iraq and was twice wounded by gunfire.

Kyle left the Navy in 2009 and was president of Craft International, which provides training to military and law enforcement professionals.

Recently, he also appeared as an "operative" on the NBC reality show Stars Earn Stripes, in which "celebrities are challenged to execute complicated missions inspired by real military exercises."

He was married and has two children.

UPDATE: Alleged shooter tasered at Erath County Jail after becoming aggressive with guards
 Dallas Morning News ^ | 2/3/2013

Posted on Sunday, February 03, 2013 11:02:27 PM by GVnana

Police say Eddie Ray Routh, the 25-year-old suspect in the murder of Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield, was tasered after becoming aggressive with jailers around dinnertime Sunday.

After eating dinner, Routh refused to return his food tray to jailers. He became aggressive and tried to attack them when they tried to get it back from him, said Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant.

Jailers tasered Routh and placed him in a restraining chair in his solitary cell. He is on suicide watch, Bryant said.

Bryant also said there have been death threats made against Routh since news of his alleged actions spread.

Update at 2:18 p.m.: Officials say that Eddie Ray Routh, the suspect in the double murder of Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield, fled the crime scene in Kyle’s Ford pickup truck.

-snip-

Routh is currently unemployed, Bryant said. He could not confirm whether Routh was on medication or was diagnosed with PTSD.

Update at 11:28 a.m.: Eddie Routh, who was arrested on Saturday in connection to the fatal shooting at Rough Creek Lodge and Resort, is being held at the Erath County jail on a $3 million bond, according to officials.

Routh, 25, was arrested on two counts of murder and one count of capital murder, according to Lonny Haschel, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

-snip-

Kyle was dedicated to helping veterans, especially those suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. He helped found FITCO Cares Foundation, a non-profit organization that provided in-home fitness equipment to veterans with PTSD.
