I just got finished with a book about the three royal cousins and their involvement in World War One. It speaks at the end of Wilhems abdication, but all of the other kings of Germany as well. I am familiar with how the British system works with the dukes and duchys etc, but how can there be other kings? It refers to the King of Bavaria and a few others. How does this work? I know it's a stupid question, but to someone who grew up in the US, with little understanding, it doesn't make much sense. Also, I found it pretty awesome that through Victoria, all of European monarchs were related.

Germany was divided up among heirs to the King, and mini kingdoms were created within the nation.

Why wouldn't they be arch dukes or grand dukes, why kings? Is there a page, other than a Wikipedia that describes how these monarchy's work, and what are the particular kingdoms within a country?

I only have a vague knowledge of it, but I'm sure there are probably web pages out there explaining it.  It was just something unique that happened at that time and that place.

And through Victoria, all the European monarchs received a few bad genes.

germany only came in to Existance in 1870 with the King of Prussia as its monarch.
For most of its previous history it was the Holy Roman Empire (but neither holy or Roman) which was more a confederation of duckdons and principalitise.
