I don't know that any of them would be considered great Thinkers.  And this is the first I am hearing that Jesus was a meditator, but I hear people attribute all types of things to him.  And to link meditation with being a great thinker is absurd, to be a good thinker, one needs to practice thinking.  You would be amazed how few people THINK for themselves.

Ok, fair enough. I have many many problems with religion too. All I know is when I slow down, sit and be still I feeling better and think more clearly.

Many Buddhist use a type of walking meditation. Meditation is more than sitting in the lotus position and emptying your mind. It's a form of focusing your attention on the task at hand.

And there ate countless studies that show relaxation and meditation has positive health consequences
Studies are pretty much useless these days, they have been corrupted to suit someone's agenda.  Your own experience is what counts, if sitting still and focusing is of benefit to you, then do it, but I would argue their are more effective ways to minimise stress, and also meditation can have the opposite effect, it can actually cause people distress.

Meditation was never really meant for the Western suburbanite yuppie with too much money and time on their hands.  It is an ancient eastern practice used by Monks to attain enlightenment (Whatever the fuck that is).  The fact is, Westerners are so impressionable and looking for new and crazy ways to spend their time and money, meditation is just the flavour of the month so to speak.  Meditation in the Westerners hand is more than likely to fuck them up than it is too help them.

Just keep it simple, stick to your own Cultures beliefs and tradition, their will be value in them, don't go dabbling in cultures that have no bearing on your current one.  Exercise, eat well, study, make friends etc etc, Keep it Simple, forget about enlightenment and just GO FOR A WALK!

Well then, this is a sign that you are NOT Thinking clearly when you are not meditating, you are too wound up, like a guitar string that is too tight and about to snap.  Better to find a way to balance your life so that you can feel good and think clearly MOST OF THE TIME.  If you feel good and think clearly the majority of the time, you won't have a need to take time out to find ways to achieve this.

I find staying busy wont allow my mind time to be depressed. It sounds like you have alot of time to sit around and be depressed. Only you have the power to bring yourself out of depression.

Btw Jesus might be considered a mediator as he went alone to pray alot and spent considerable time in the morning to himself. The bible mentions these.
The word meditation may carry different meanings in different contexts, I guess a popular description for it is focused attention, and I don't know that I would call prayer or alone time necessarily meditation.

If, by moving beyond thoughts of self you mean become less egocentric and less selfish and more community minded, you don't need meditation for that, you just need to ask yourselves how will your actions affect your neighbour then act in a way that is as close to a win win as you can get.

And I think you will find, historically The whole point of meditation was to cleanse the mind of impurities and disturbances so as to attain so-called enlightenment.  Don't get caught up in all this NEW AGE nonsense, these traditions come from a very ancient times and have little relevance in a modern world.  Remember, Buddhists believe all types of crazy shit, if you are struggling with some type of mood disorder, stick to the basics, and don't get lost in some metaphysical esoteric fog.
The whole intention of meditation is to reach a point when your internal dialogue with yourself slows down.

Some people can really do it, and it does wonders for your body and mind, there are tons of brain scans to do it.

Yes, but this state can be achieved through just doing something that you enjoy and participate wholeheartedly in.  But I think you are overstating the benefits of such an internal state, and I think you will find the people who achieve such states practice intensely for many many years.  Don't put your own cultures discoveries below those of some other cultures, meditation may be helpful, but not to the degree that most people claim it is.  If you look hard enough, you will also find meditation practitioners (Buddhist monks) who were angry arseholes.

Going for a long walk also does wonders for your body and mind, but for some reason, walking isn't some new Western discovery about the mystical East and has been pushed to the side.  Like most Westerners it sounds like you have put the practice of meditation on a pedestal.  I would argue that things like eating well coupled with an activity like weight training, callisthenics or a myriad of other activities offer as much if not far more benefit than meditation for most Western people.

In the past Men were too busy getting food in the table to get depressed.

I don't think the men who built our country from fukin' nothing to the best in the world by bare hands in extreme poverty had time to be depressed.
That's what I try to remember when I feel down.

FUKIN' nothing grew here.
In most places you have fukin' banananas hanging from trees to eat and oil and gold and all to dig from ground.
Here you get sunlight for few short months.

I believe your suggestions are good things to do when feeling a little down, but when you are seriously depressed, those things will just remind you of the emptiness and pointlessness of life.  Serious depression requires Intervention and professional help.

This.

haha yes!!! I have the same thoughts!!!  Wonder it Patton was depressed when he strapped Pancho Villa and his men to the hood of his jeep?  These are the kind of men we need to emulate!

Cognitive therapy, visiting the relevant professionals (psychiatrists perhaps), meditation, establishing, pursuing, and achieving realistic goals, exercise, and, perhaps medication.

serious question.
First, find out if the depression is enviomental
If not enviomental buy some l methylfolate.
People with the MTHFR gene can process folate acid correctly. And one of the results is depression.
Find someone to talk too about your problems. A psychologists or a priest. priests with talk to you for free.

It's funny I'd bet money more than a few getbiggers would melt pretty dam fast living here.

It's like living in the south, minus loose black woman, and sunshine.
