I agree that prison should not be a cake walk. For those who can be reeducated to become contributing citizens, everything possible should be done to accomplish this and to avoid recidivism. Prison should be harsh enough that no one in their right mind would want to go back.

Prisoners should be required to work. If it is slavery, so be it. Their housing, food and medical needs etc. are paid for by the tax payer. It is not wrong for us to expect something in return. It costs on average $45,000 to house a prison inmate for a year. That's a pretty good income for a single person.

So how do you manage the pressure to see that crime takes place, when the advantage becomes the gaining of slaves?
