Favorite FREE Apps
« on: February 22, 2013, 01:28:56 PM »
What are your favorite free apps and their uses?

I love Shazam.  It identifies a song as quick as 1 second, sometimes a little more.  So it's great when you're driving and a song comes on you want to download later (I'd forget  ::)).  It keeps track (tags) of the songs you Shazam'd so when you get around to doing your downloads, you have your list right there.  It worked out great at Christmas while out shopping.  I'd hear a familiar song but maybe by an artist I wasn't.  Boom!  Shazam!  Iv'e got a great Christmas playlist now of not so traditional Christmas music.

Tango - allows me to keep in touch with my best friend who will be deployed oversees next week, and will have his cell service shut off. The app allows you to talk, text, and share videos and pictures!

Weather Bug and My Radar - each has its advantages

Around Me - you can search for local businesses by either name or category. It doesn't show everything, but it's not bad for the price.

ShopSavvy - allows you to search for products. Results list online and store retailers in order of price. Many products searches also contain product descriptions, reviews, and other related items.

Seconds - is a programmable interval timer. Only the Pro-version allows you to save, import, and share timers.

Dragon Dictation - your own stenographer. Surprisingly accurate.

Brit + Co. - Offers a host of creative ideas for interior decorating, fashion, planning parties, etc.

The one that was loaded on my phone works pretty well.  I think it's Google Maps.

I use Google Maps to get printed directions. Do they also offer a turn-by-turn navigation-type function?
I'm looking for something that can be used like a TomTom.

Yup.  It can be verbal with a live moving map  - in 1000 feet, turn right, merge right ahead, your destination is on the left... (with a real picture) or in straight printed form.  It's never steered me wrong, although it sometimes contradicted a friends Tom-Tom when driving through South Carolina.  I told her we should listen to the woman over Tommy.  ;D
