BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A New York Assemblyman's proposal to prohibit kids under 11 from playing tackle football isn't going over well with some coaches.
In Buffalo Thursday, a handful of youth football leaders and participants joined state Sen. Timothy Kennedy outside a stadium to protest the idea.
Assemblyman Michael Benedetto introduced the legislation last week, telling reporters it's meant to protect children. It comes amid increasing discussion over the harmful and potentially lasting effects of concussions in youth sports.
But Kennedy says youth football is part of the community and that there are ways to keep children safe while allowing them to play the game. He says decisions about whether kids can play should be made by parents, not lawmakers.
Benedetto's legislation would apply only to organized tackle football.
