Another point from a kinesiological standpoint is that not only should you go to a dead hang you shouldn't just try to reach your chin. Think of getting your elbows all the way down for a full contraction.

I feel the exact opposite.  for overall strength, I feel pullups are superior and they are one of my favorite exercises.

Yup.   

I been doing burpee / pull up combos and the soreness in the back muscles lasts for a few days. 

I rarely get anything like that ever on a lat pull down.

I put a sheet of paper towell in each hand helps with grip when doing pullups. I do 50 reps every back workout.

for me pull ups give best pump and soreness after.

maybe you should try full rom,you know

I am not so strong in pullups, but I always use full ROM.

Haven't done pullups in awhile ....will add to my back workout next time :)
