It's something I've noticed in the surrounding community, on tv and in movies.

I live in San Antonio, Texas (population approx 1.5 million) and on my street the only white families are mine and one other.   All the other families are mexican families and black families.

So, why do black men cover their mouths like they're coughing into their hand when laughing?  Is it the cool way to laugh?   Am I not laughing correctly when I don't cover my mouth?

No way!  We like where we're at right now.  Great neighbors, everyone is respectful, no loud music or parties, neighborhood kids are nice, people keep their homes and lawns up, nice parks in the area, good food always being grilled, people bring in each other trashcans/papers, no incidents with police, nobody speeds down the streets....we love it.

Agreed and so do the mexicans attempting to "be black".  Which leads me back to my question of why do black men cover their mouths like they're coughing when laughing? 

Of course, somebody will ask, "why do white guys not cover their mouths when laughing?"   This "laugh covering" is a fairly recent development (from what I can tell) so I wonder why it started and why it persists?  As I kid I don't recall seeing it like I do today.  Not saying it didn't happen then, I'm just saying I don't remember seeing it.

I would say it's a cultural thing. We all have our unique idiosyncrasies, and learn these from observation. As far as it being new, I remember it plain as day from watching Def Comedy Jam when I was a kid.

i've never noticed it, but maybe i'm not very observant.  i went to a concert recently and the friends i went with later informed everyone that it was a dangerous environment (admittedly the venue was near the "ghetto").  I saw a lot of weirdly dressed/weird haired fat chicks but at no time did i feel unsafe, nor did i notice any weird laughing... maybe because my powers of observation are lacking.
