In World War Z they simply get waterlogged and sink to the bottom of the ocean/lake/body of water and they are still mobile.

Not "alive" so no air in blood or lungs. So not counting extreme pressures, they could basically crawl on the ocean bottom and/or float to the aircraft carriers.....

The tv series is awesome because they don't follow the comic format to a "T".   I wouldn't have any interest if it were a strict adaption of the graphic novel.  They mix up who they kill and who they let live.

Carl is annoying as fuck.  Even in the comics.  But unfortunately he is sticking around.

Glenn on the other hand....  can't say about the series but in the comics he was ok... pretty cool.   Got killed when a leader of another group bashed his brains all over the road with a bat wrapped in barbed wire (named Lucille) just to prove a point.

Supposively this is what happens to Merle:

Merle Dixon dies after he is strangled by the Governor, according to the spoiler alert. Merle then bites both Ben and Martinez. Daryl find Martinez and mercifully puts him down – and then finds the zombie version of his older brother.

Shane was the original bad ass.  The group would be much different if he were in charge (being dead sort of changes that)

In the graphic novel, Ben was the twin of Billy, his brother.  He was a budding serial killer that killed animals and such for amusement and then one day lured his twin brother in the woods and killed him with a knife.  It was a pivotal moment in the book because the group was horrified by it and knew no one was safe around him.  Almost everyone wanted to kill him, but no one wanted to come out and say they should kill a small kid.  Carl later slipped out in the night and shot him.

My guess is they are already on the road and out of there. Black chick will come back and tell them that Merle was headed there to spark up the battle. They will choose to leave. You can tell by the number of people the Gov had invade the prison that there's no way anyone will be there. The probably set booby traps at the prison and took off.
