What's with these weird gas-mask looking things at the gym?
« on: March 22, 2013, 07:44:26 AM »
I've seen three guys in the last week or two, wearing these devices at the gym. What manner of weirdness is this?

I saw this in Maine. I guess I could understand if you were training to climb Everest or something? Other than that, no idea. Probably some cross fit stupidity.

I've heard they're some sort of oxygen mask. I've seen a guy in the gym wearing one. And some sort of training vest walking around like a baddass like Bane...And they used to say TV and movies don't influence people. ::)

There's a hose on the mouthpiece going to their cock so they get the protein straight from the tap. You CANNOT miss the anabolic window!

Just attention whores who want the latest greatest new fitness gadget. So going running outside is to easy for you? You have to make it hard to breath to increase your VO2?

They are trying to avoid the radioactive particles coming down with the fallout from Fukushima.

Now serious, at the time of the accident, when the reactors were burning strong, and radioactive fallout being detected over the USA, i saw a thread in a conspiracy forum, by a very worried man wanting to buy a gas mask after seeing concerned people using then in his gym while working out to avoid breathing the particles while deep breathing.

After several answers and directions, someone came to explain they were using some training technique with those gas masks.

I do legit want a 100lb training vest. Things are freaking expensive though. I used to just have a backpack I would stuff 25s in but the straps broke doing deads one day and it fell down the back of my legs and slid down my ankles. Felt awesome. :P It was a hell of a lot easier to do supersets with it on exercises than a regular chain with a weight strapped on it. I am not wanting a vest to look like a badass, I'm pretty sure I will look like a retard.

Yes, there are those few who do that (which is retarded)...but don't single out CF.  The gas masks have been used by MMA guys for a while...and the use of them was even shown on a season or two of The Ultimate Fighter.

from what I understand you can adjust/restrict air flow to simulate breathing in a higher altitude during training. The whole create more white blood cell deal, better stamina when priming in lower altitude...etc.

never used one .....and I'm sure those gym guys are dying for someone to ask them what it's for so they can talk your ear off.

ask one and report back lol

I should have emphasized any sort of gimmick "END ALL BE ALL" training.

This.  However, unless you are doing intense cardio or running it is basically worthless.
