Powerlifting would've been the sport. Hoffman disliked Weider style bodybuilding that focused on looks. His pet sport of Olympic Lifting was fading as a sport, as more young men were going into Powerlifting, as it was slightly easier due to the less technical nature of the lifts.

Grimek, and younger lifters similar to him would've still been the poster boy for the well muscled man in Hoffman's mind.

Good question. HARDGAINER!

Here's my attempt to offer a decent answer.

Competitive boybuilding would have been completely different if Hoffman was in control and would have most likely still be  sanctioned by the AAU.

Here’s my thoughts based on personal recollection

Once Upon a Time .....Back in the early 60’s bodybuilding and Olympic lifting competitions were under the control of and sanctioned by the AAU (Amateur Athletic Union).

There were three other non-AAU  individuals back east who were  involved with bodybuilding by the names of Dan  Lurie and the brothers – Joe and Ben Weider; but they were not active on the west coast and  one of them never would be.

So back in the early 1960’s Bob Hoffman and his York Pa crew gathered together in downtown Los Angeles at the old Embassy Auditorium to promote the AAU National Olympic Lifting Championships.

To the best of my recollection this was a one-day event which included the AAU Mr America contest.

To make this long story short, the first sign of the bodybuilders on stage was about 3 AM and only after  the Olympic records were computed, awards passed out, and all the Olympic weights removed from the auditorium and placed on the trucks.

Once that was all taken care of …. the bodybuilding competition started.

The relatively few individuals who remained in the auditorium were mainly family members of the competitors who were compelled to stay because they most likely had the car keys in their pocket.

So there was no prejudging. Just a brief lineup followed by the individual routines and a short intermission while the  judges’ score-sheets were tabulated.

Jerry Daniels won that year but for the first time in bodybuilding history no one complained because almost no one was there to voice an objection

We left that event as the sun came up.

This was the type of thing that occurred on numerous occasions until a handful of individuals decided that  bodybuilding needed to be organized on its own outside of the AAU …. Which is another story that should be told someday.

This should give you somewhat of a good  idea of how BB comps would be today  if  Bob Hoffman had taken over.

BTW .... The York guys were great people but their main interest was Olympic Lifting.

But this is only a small part of what actually happened regarding the Weider brothers and their eventual connection to the NPC.

There was a meeting held in Santa Monica and 'everyone' was present .... but that's a true Once-Upon-a-Time story that may come later if there is any interest.

AND THEY LIVED HAPPPILY EVER AFTER!!

Until the arrival of GetBig that is.

In AAU contests black guys in the early days didn't have a chance at winning. So many clearly were better than the winner but they fixed the contest with points for speaking during an oral interview. Weider let black guys on the cover of his magazine back in the day and also told black bodybuilders they would be judged fairly. Chris Dickerson was the first black guy they let win when they just couldn't hold back black bodybuilders anymore.

If Hoffman won, bodybuilding would be all AAU, and held after lifting meets (either Powerlifting or O/L).  And there would be no money in it for anyone.

And the sport might still be respectable as a sport........yes, as a sport.
