fun facts:

 - he has healthier knees than non-lifters
 - he has healthier knees than bodybuilders doing 180kg half-squats which RUIN your knees by creating structural imbalances
 - doing 100-140kg full back squats without belt will make you stronger, healthier and less prone to injury than average person. yes, doing twice that amount is not as safe anymore but it is

Everyday if I smile, it means my back is ok and so is my mood. It's not because I've done well in training. I'm just happy I'm OK after training. It hurts a lot, but what can I do, other than wear a belt or change the way I practice. It can't be cured. My back is what I depend on.

but yes riding a bike and marathon running can also wear down the joints

From what I know every top olympic lifter like Zielinski, Dolega, Ilin can squat over 300kg after training session. I had opportunity to talk with a guy who trains olympic weightlifting in Poland, he claims IIRC Zielinski squats 340kg after snatches and cleans with perfect form, with belt.

They usually don't brag about it simply because they don't care. Pat Mendes is an internet star more than weightlifter, he never achieved anything anywhere.

Overall, USA is nothing in olympic weightlifting compared to Russia, Bulgaria or even Poland, Kazachstan.

BTW their training is fucking brutal. 6 days a week, 2 to 3 training sessions per day. Morning is like squat, snatch, clean, squat. Then snatch, clean&jerk, front squat. Then third, "light" session, working on weak points etc.

On top of that guys from lower weight categories of course diet down.




guy could compete in bodybuilding with BF like that.

average oly lifter at my club during intense phase train 10 time a week

they squat two time a day on monday-wed-friday (6 set of 6 morning and 6 set of 6 afternoon with various percentage)

That's 180kgs at 98kgs. They think he might try out for 2016 as a #94 or #105 lifter.

As to the whole squats thing, he's fine, they all drop like that. Olympic lifters do usually show higher rates of chronic hip and shoulder injury, but it's slight, and as SF1900 mentioned, it's more from years of heavy overuse than anything else.

You can't find anyone in high level physical sports that doesn't have a little wear and tear on them. Heck the average fat person walking around a department store is in a similar boat, just from everyday things.

those john broz lifters actually do that seven days a week, max weights every session. I can only imagine how many drugs they need to take to keep their systems normalized, since studies show that even 'regular' olympic overtraining destroys pretty much every hormonal output

Also when you look at the Bulgarian Max every day, multiple types a day work outs, the things folks are missing are:

1) Those kids have multiple years building up to that frequency, plus the full restorative buffet.

2) Those programs aren't built around true 1 rep slam your head against the wall, have your wife slap you across the face, all while chugging a few halotestin tabs like Powerlifting maxes are. It's based off daily perceived maxes that are much mellower than true maxes. It's more of a "this feels heavy today, we'll stick with this" type max.

3) Also while the intensities are high, the volume is still modest by some bodybuilding standards. The total number of reps per day for any given exercise is still only low double digits.

4) Actually speak to the lifters that were in those programs, it may say xyz per day, but in practice it wasn't as rigorous. Guys could claim injuries and have an easy go of it, they could ask for more time on technique and shave off training time, they could even have smoking breaks.

It is a tough system, but actually look at the programming for a few months, it's different than what people think it is.
