Oh I'm not bragging lol.  And I know it's way better for my joints.  When I was a much younger and lighter man I did a lot of running.    These days I think cycling is my beat bet

you can do this without having to spend a fortune on a bike, like anything else there are those that say you gotta have this or that to be able to do it. I had a decent road bike i bought in 1988 that i put thousands of miles on over the years, paid around 300 back then still have it too. I rode everyday, to work, to the gym and for long rides every other day i would ride 25-30 miles in the morning lay in grass at park take a nap and tan then go home and eat. Then ride another 25-30 miles just before dinner, usually same route just start from opposite direction. i lived on top of a foothill so no matter which way i went i always had to work hard on the way back, 1,000 ft elevation gain in 2.5 miles.
I miss having that free time to bike like i did, one of the best exercises on the planet. Great way to keep trim stay with it ;)

Biking is great. About 15 years ago I rode across Iowa. 500 miles in 5 days. I had really expensive road bikes in the past. You need a good road bike to keep up with friends who have skinny high pressure tire road bikes. Now I ride an upright hybrid with fat tires. I ride by myself slow with my slow bike and let the racing bikes blow by me. I like riding in comfort instead of bend over. I get the same workout but I can't get any real speed on this bike.

I know what you mean, my bike had some pretty narrow tires and was a racing bike to boot, just not top of the line as some folks think they have to have.

Of course you don't need an insane bike . Those bikes I linked are the top of their line. It's like admiring a Ferrari, and there are more expensive than those. I'd say you can get by with about a $1000-1200 total investment if you are wanting to be fairly serious. You need a pump, spare tubes, tools. If you get serious you will want clipless pedals, and the shoes alone will be over $100.
