LOL, the irony.A Texas man committed suicide by shooting himself in the head during the National Rifle Association-sponsored NRA 500 Sprint Cup Race on Saturday in Forth Worth.
42-year-old Kirk Franklin of Saginaw, Texas, got in an argument with other campers in the infield of the track at Texas Motor Speedway before dying from of a "self-inflicted injury,” according to USA Today.
According to police spokeswoman Cpl. Tracey Knight, alcohol may have been involved. Franklin’s body was found in the backseat of a truck.
Texas law prohibited fans from bringing firearms to the track. This was the first Sprint Cup Series race that the NRA sponsored. The organization’s sponsorship of the race was criticized after NASCAR driver Michael Waltrip ran a Sandy Hook benefit car at the Daytona 500 encouraging fans to donate to victims' families Newtown, Conn.
The NRA 500 was aired on Fox even though Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy wrote a letter to the network requesting that it not broadcast the race. Kyle Busch won Saturday’s event.
