Notice that he isn't grimacing.   Is that just an old-school thing now?  I remember reading about how important it is to keep a relatively neutral face even when fully flexed.

Back in the days they were serious when posing, like they had some dignity.

Then they began smiling, very exaggerated.

Then something happened, I do not know who started it. Maybe someone here can dig it out but it seemed to happen somewhere in the 80/90s.

I actually think the smile transitioned, into a grimace. Try yourself to smile during a most muscular pose...

I thought this pic was interesting... Phil's arms look to be 2 inches bigger here... but Jay's chest looks world-class compared to Phil.

Not from that angle but Phil will never be able to match Jay for width in actuality. Phil might not be as narrow as he was but Jay is right up there in that regard.

Both poses are a little deceiving because they are purposely squeezing their bodies, shoulders and chest together.  You need one of them doing a lat spread or just standing relaxed to really judge.
