Christopher Reeve was fantastic in the role.  None better.  Before or since.  His Clark Kent was superlative and his Superman was equally impressive.

I think he hit just the right note between big and lean. He's not really lean...but he's JUST lean enough to make his gains look big.

I like Alex Ross' idea that Superman should be a big strong guy but not necessarily a bodybuilder type. It's Batman who needs to work his ass off in the gym - Supes is just stronger because of the yellow sun.
