Notice the swelling in his right ankle.  Apparently this is an early sign of kidney failure.  :(

Platz quote:

"While it’s on my mind, let me explain that sometimes I would not do leg extensions first or I would do hack squats first. In fact, I’d usually mix it up according to my instinct. In some workouts I’d go on the hack squat machine first, and I would start with some warmup sets. I can remember doing reps and sets and partials and isometrics and half-reps, with my partner there helping me, to the point where I’d actually go somewhere. My mind would leave the gym.
It was a strange experience. But the reps were always quite high and the weights were very heavy. At that point I was able to put five 45 pound plates on each side and do 30 or 40 reps."

Its that mental control that we must all strive for. Once u have such abilities, then and only then can u trully train intense!! I think mentzer had similar control for his 1 all out set.

PLatz was the dugs baws.

Here's another picture:

I remember there was a thread about this on a different board a few years back.  I don't think he had permanent damage, but it was probably a warning sign.

He probably just had really bad circulation.. is thighs touch each other.. im sure that cut off blood supply very often to the rest of his leg.

Or the photo was taken a few days after a show, when he had pigged out, and was rebounding with water retention.

swollen ankles are a sign of heart failure/circulation problems and not kidney failure

In the Platz/Leo Costa workout tapes, Tom explains that he injured his calf doing seated calf raises a few days before the show/photo session. He said (I'm paraphrasing but these words were used) "Of course, everyone thought it was the drugs, but it was that I injured my calf doing seated calf raises and you can see it in the photos that were taken."
Tom used to love forced negatives on leg curls, calf raises and a lot of the movements that allowed such practice. I like doing this too; and you'll get such an intense feeling when doing it, if feels like you're tearing a muscle. Tom being the trainer he is/was, probably just took it too far and injured himself.
Had nothing to do with the drugs or the amount of them.

How the hell could Coleman win legs with NO calves?

Ronnie's legs as a whole are no where near Platz.

Is it true, platz loved his high rep sets for squats (almost heavy breathing style squatting), and would just squat for minutes at a time?!

davie

I remember watching him do legs and he would always go to failure.  Not even sure he counted reps  he just went on and on.  He had two guys help him to the bench and sit down after every set.  It was unreal how he punished his legs.

This picture is absolutely ridiculous. Look at how thick those legs are. WTF.

You Ronnie fan-boys are a funny breed. Ronnie's legs are fantastic but Platz was on another planet. No one is/was even close.

That would explain why he only has swelling on one ankle.  :)
