....but why should the politicians of Graz decide that it's greatest hero's name be removed from a stadium?  What do the people have to say?  Arnold is not the reason Tookie is dead, Tookie is (was)...to blame Arnold for this is a slap in the face to the man who made the name 'Graz' known around the world.  What a shame.
F**k Arnold.

These politicians are elected. The people vote them into office on election day, that is why it's important that as many people as possible vote - to get a fair representation of the people's voice.

If these elected officials make the call that the actions of Arnold makes him not worthy of having a stadium in his name, then they should of course make moves to remove his name.

These politicians are obviously against death penalty. And if they are, then it is obviously extremely wrong from THEIR POINT OF VIEW, when Arnold, who had the chance of saving Tookie's life, didn't do so.

If Arnold wrote that letter to beat the Graz politicians in some tactical race, then I think he's a piece of shit. I hate political tactics.

But if he just acted on political beliefs, then I think it's all good.

I have a feeling we will see what the motives were in the coming weeks.

You and I both know democracy isn't one sided.  You mean to tell me over 75% of the people in Graz agree with what their politicians say and do?  Please.  I bet if you ask the everyday person there what they think of Arnie's name being removed they'd tell you "Why?...what?"...the politicians are obviously using this to promote their own ideals and agendas.

Arnold isn't responsible for this.  We could argue the finer points all day but really, what's the point, I guess we don't agree.  Fair enough.  I don't agree with capital punishment either but then again my parents haven't been bloodily murdered....it's funny how quick people change their minds.

No. I never said over 75% of the people in Graz agreed with the political majority. Not even extremely popular leaders like Mandela, Evo Morales or Vaclav Havel got that support in their first election.

But they are the political majority of Graz. And thus, they have the mandates to make such a decision.

...which confirms to me that it's political morons who are behind removing the name of the Greatest Grazian from a stadium, not 'the people', which I call bullshit.  But perhaps it's better this way, I mean, I'm sure they've got plenty of more deserving champion/actor/multi-millionaire/american governor locals to name it after....idiots!

Whatever.  The 'people' have spoken.

Austrian Mayor Asks Schwarzenegger to Reconsider Withdrawal of Ties
« Reply #32 on: December 21, 2005, 06:59:02 AM »
The mayor of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Austrian hometown on Tuesday begged the California governor to reconsider his decision to cut ties to the city after locals assailed him for his death penalty stance.

Siegfried Nagl, mayor of the southern city of Graz, said he wrote Schwarzenegger pleading with him not to return a ring of honor bestowed on him by officials in his birthplace in 1999 and reassuring him that most residents still admire him."I hope that very soon we'll hear you say, 'I'll be back,'" Nagl told the actor-turned-politician, one of Austria's most famous sons.

On Monday, Schwarzenegger caused a stir by turning the tables on Austrians who criticized the governor's refusal to block the executions of convicted killers. He sent Graz officials a letter asking them to remove his name from a soccer stadium and stop using it to promote the city, and said he was giving back the ring because it "has lost its meaning and value to me."

His demands effectively pre-empted a drive launched by opponents in Austria who already were gathering signatures on a petition calling for the 15,300-seat arena in Graz, about 120 miles south of Vienna, to be renamed.

"Graz will not have problems in the future with my decisions as governor of California, because officially nothing connects us any more," Schwarzenegger told the daily Kronen Zeitung in an interview for Tuesday's editions. "The death penalty is law here, and I have to uphold the law of the land and the will of the people," Schwarzenegger was quoted as saying, adding that he still considered himself "Austrian with all my heart."

Nagl told Austrian television he hoped to persuade Schwarzenegger. At a minimum, he said, he hoped to persuade Schwarzenegger to keep the ring - though he conceded he did not expect to succeed. "Those who know him realize he sticks to his opinions," he said. "The chances are not good. I regret this deeply, but I understand."

Kurt Flecker, a local official with the opposition Social Democrats, said Schwarzenegger damaged his own image - not Graz's - by refusing to spare Williams' life. There is no point, he said, in "glorifying anyone who supports the death penalty."

But Hermann Schuetzenhoefer, a tourism adviser in the province of Styria where Graz is located, said Tuesday he also wrote a letter to Schwarzenegger expressing regret "that some politicians who proudly bore your name a few years ago are dragging it through the dirt now."

....exactly.  Some few politicians making asses of themselves and essentially ruining relations between Arnold and the people of Graz on behalf of their 'beliefs'...thanks politicians!...I'm sure the business owners in Graz are happy as well!  Absolute stupidity.

I see that as soon as the current morons are out of office the new guard will right this wrong...that is, if they're smart.

what a bunch of douchebags, when did they become such pussies?

its not like arnold personally killed an innocent person, he simply didnt intervene in the execution of a multiple murderer.

maybe instead we should have shipped their beloved tookie over to austria with the instructions to shoot store workers with a shotgun.

Sadly for Austria: Austria needs Schwarzenegger, but Schwarzenegger doesn`t need Austria.

Exactly... this was a brilliant move. Now, instead of having to deal with incessant controversy over this that makes him look weak, he ended the debate and the controversy permanently by saying "f**k you" to the Socialist whiners over in Graz.

Socialist whiners.

What do you mean? Socialism isn't the political system in Austria. Austria is a democracy.

Dummbass he's talking about a social market economy - the middle ground of socialism and capitolism which was adopted by most northern and western european countries during the cold war - common knowlege. And there is a such thing as a social democracy ::)
