Maryland governor O'Malley wanted to charge state tax on Amazon sales.

Couldn't a business just refer you to a shipper to pay the postage?  If their involvement ends with accepting payment and passing the item along to a shipping contractor, how are they to know where you are or what tax to apply?

And if the shipping company happens to operate in the same building as the seller, and happens to share website space with the seller in order to facilitate shit, well so be it.

Although this sucks dick, and I hate paying sales tax on online purchases, this is how it should be.  The reason many local and state governments are failing is because because today's generation buys most of their taxable goods online.  Therefore the local and state govt are taking a huge hit in tax revenue.  30 years ago, if you wanted a new car stereo, tv, game console, etc, you went down to your local electronics store, made the purchase, and paid sales tax.  Now, you can go on ebay, amazon, or one of many online retailers, make your purchase and skip the sales tax.

This bill would suck, and would ultimately make people start paying more than they are now.  However, it might be necessary to a certain degree.   :-\

How on earth are little online stores going to be able to deal with 50 seprate state taxes and remittances?

Must be CPA's lobbying for this too.

Not only that, people shop online to save money, this will make things not much different than a brick and mortar store.

Once again the burden will fall on the middle class and the lower class while the top 1% won't give a shit because they will end up paying 15% if not slightly more because of all the loopholes.

We are on track to both have income tax and a sales tax system that rivals VAT in other countries.

once you put your address in, or where it will be shipped to, then it will probably add the tax...but here is the question, it should be the billing address, and not the shipped to address if that is a different state than the billing address.

Why does it have to be like 30 years ago?  Maybe the time of having retail stores and shopping malls has come and gone.  Let the public drive the demand, not government intervention.

It doesn't have to be like 30 years ago as far as shopping goes.  However, if you want local and state govt services to continue, then taxes have to be like it was 30 years ago.  How do you propose we fund our city governments if there is no local tax revenue?  Should they just start planting money trees, and hope for the best?  Or, they could just raise the shit out of property taxes, and tax everyone out of their homes?  HTH.   :D

All I see are new schools, fire stations, post offices, patrol cars, fire trucks, etc.  There's plenty of revenue under the current system and they certainly don't need additional revenue from online tax.  Do you think you'll receive a cut on your property taxes or sales tax if they tap into this additional revenue?  Not a chance.

Fact, population is growing.  In order for state and local govt to support the growing population, they will need for revenue in their budgets.  If you can somehow figure out how to keep the population from growing, and keep everything exactly the same, then we've got it made.
