Because the fight isn't officially over until the referee says so.
Many times, you punch a guy straight to the face, he experiences a flask KO (which at first glance appears to be a full knockout punch, with your opponent both going stiff and falling towards the ground) and then a half a second or so later he recovers and can come back at you with full force, which can land you in a bad predicament if your guard is down. Not to mention, that I have seen fighters get "revived" after a knockout by way of another punch.
Dan was simply looking to make sure that he had a real knockout and that the fight was definitively over.
