any getbiggers use a chainsaw?
« on: April 27, 2013, 08:34:11 PM »
I just got a 50cc chainsaw. Gonna go cut down a bunch of trees on my property next week. I am a bit intimidated by the really thick trees but I will dominate that shit.

I can't wait to start cutting through shit. ;D

you need a pulley ratchet and a chain , to ensure it will fall in desired direction

What if I just notch it really well and create a good hinge for it to fall with?

I've read a LOT of things about how to cut down trees and they never mentioned pulleys and chains ???

Exactly. My buddy works as a tree cutter and he said I just gotta let the notch and hinge do all the work.

I'm gonna start on the small trees and work my way up to the old growth beasts.

Just stop, you are wrong. Cut down a ton of trees, have seen my father cut down a ton of trees, have seen tree services cut down a ton of trees. 90% of the time those devices werent used

From what I researched, you can factor all that stuff in, lean on the tree and weight in the canopy just needs to be considered, but it doesn't totally control its fall.

But I will look into what you are talking about.

Thanks man.

I have tons of space to drop the trees. Shouldn't be too hard.

A lad i know who does it for a living cuts down some really large trees using just a chainsaw and wedges. Just keeps cutting deeper and adding wedges so it falls away. If you have to chop them up start with the tops and work down as the nearer the roots the higher the soil content which will blunt your chain faster.

Good info. Careful not to bury the blade into the dirt, could be unseen rocks you will hit or even cause a ricochet. Good way is to do several cut half way through the tree then cut all the way through in one spot. Flip the log over and finish the cuts with no risk of blunting your saw

x2

but will he listen?

I've cut down many trees and the notch thing is not fail safe what so ever. I never take a chance, except once working with this guy who said he knew what he was doing, instead of falling in direction of the notch the tree fell right next to somebodies RV, of cause he said " it fell just like I wanted it too ", I didn't bother to say anything.

Always notch it. A good-sized notch is usually enough to control fall direction. If the tree is near anything like a house, garage, power lines, etc., a ratchet is a good idea for added precaution. Make sure there are no twists in the strap, as this will weaken its strength.

Chainsaw's sometimes will kickback on you meaning if they hit knot or something in the wood watch out.
