ted missed most parts of 6 years to the military, war hero pilot[it was said williams was the guy john wayne always wished he was]. his last year at 41 years of age he played 113 games hit 29 hrs, with a 316 ba, 451 obp, and slugged for 645 amazing to say the least. years later he was asked what he thinks he could hit in todays game, he replied about 300 the reporter said only 300. williams answered what the hell you expect i'm in my 70's.

QFT.   Read his book, The Science of Hitting, cover to cover many times over in high school.

I'm not a baseball stat guy, but was he really better than Ruth, Cobb, Wagner, Musial and Bonds?

When you look at his career stats you have to remember that he missed the better part of five years with military service, most of them in the prime of his career.  If he maintained his career averages for HR and RBI per game in those years, he would have likely been the career leader in RBI and hit more homers than anyone except Bonds, Aaron, and Babe Ruth.

He's unquestionably the greatest contact hitter ever as I outlined in my previous post.

I'm not disagreeing, just don't know enough about him to pass judgment.

The thing with Ruth, Cobb and Gehrig is that they never played with black players. And even the Babe himself said their were players even better than him like Josh Gibson (who hit more than 800 homers) and of course, Satgiel Page who could have been the greatest pitcher in the history of the game...

I give it too Williams! He was too much man for the others!!

I've heard this argument so many times, but I'm not convinced it would have had significant impact on their entire body of work.

Williams is one of the best ball players ever, for sure, and is definitely in the top 5, and definitely deserves to have his name mixed in with the greatest of the great like Ruth and Bonds.   I personally don't like trying to single out player, since they're all so incredible, but I have to give #1 to Ruth.   Compare not his numbers in their totality, but in the deviation from the league norms at the time.  It's cartoonish how much better he was then everyone else.
