A 52-year-old French hiker who fell 1,000 feet to her death was reportedly eaten by Griffon vultures within an hour.

A rescue helicopter was circling the area of Pic de Pista in the French Pyrenees but did not reach the woman's body before it was ravaged by the aggressive scavengers.

“There were only bones, clothes and shoes left on the ground,” Maj. Didier Pericou of the Gendarmerie told the Times of London. “They took 45 to 50 minutes to eat the body.”

The woman, who was hiking with two friends, reportedly fell after while trying to take a shortcut. Her name has not been released.

Griffon vultures are protected in France, but their food supply has been limited due to a rule that farmers must burn carcasses of their animals, according to the International Business Times.
