If that's the reasoning, it's pretty flawed.

They are following the money trail.  Not a lot of money in smelly hippy causes.

Because they flagged applications based on the politifical affiliation or names alone which is illegal

...so the idea is that it was done completely at the expense of neglecting other lines of investigation that may have focused upon groups with left-leaning tendencies?

The idea is that they did this to stop people from going against obama admn on issues like debt, taxes, etc.

I haven't yet read the IRS apology, but should be interesting.

I'm not sure that's true.  I agree smelly hippies and Occupy crowds probably don't have much money, but liberal PACs raise some serious coin.

Looks like you've been studying some pretty strange ideas, OzmO.

Strangeness often precedes reality

Could it be the bulk of suspicious activity at the time was centered around such groups, or is that out of the question?

I'd suggest you get a grip, then.

The question is, which time and which groups belong which groups at which times?

Are you willing to take a stab at it?

Does a question exist as to whether the Tea Party is involved primarily in political activity?

I'm sure there are left wing groups who have large sums of money but I can't imagine they are nearly as numerous as right wing organizations.  Those with large amounts of money to spend, such as industry groups and the indivduals who operate them, have agendas that are often contrary to the aims and goals of the left.

It isn't really the number of groups.  It's the amount of money they raise.  Remember how much money Obama raised during the 2008 campaign?

Sounds to me like it's big money interest versus everyone else, and the whole D vs. R is bullshit.  I wonder if such an underhanded thing could actually be true.

It's actually most likely the groups were being investigated because of political activity as much as the donors.  Groups that engage in a large amount of political activity can have their tax exempt status revoked.  You have the same donors creating and supporting a multitude of grass roots nonprofits as an arm of a political agenda and you raise the ire of the IRS.

I think this is more likely.  It was ideological, not monetary.  You previously said they were likely following the money trail.  That's why I was talking about money.

I should have been more concise.  I apologize. I think following the money gets you to who is funding these organizations and for what purpose.   Left wing groups are usually funded through individual donations with loose affiliation.
