Giant sets are done non stop in a variety of exercises, did they just slap a fancy label on giant sets? Milos should sue!!!! :D

they're nonstop, but not timed. you're not aiming to beat the clock with giant sets, you aren't scored if you do 15 reps of pushdowns in 30 seconds versus 45. more than that, you stop when you hit failure. if a CF workout says "do 50 reps of X" then you just keep on trucking until you hit 50 reps whether it means one set of 50, two sets of 25, or 10 sets of 5.

additionally, a lot of CF workouts have stuff that isn't just a "lift". like last week i did one that was shouldering a 155lb keg five times then jogging 25 yards out and back with it, six rounds total. or you'll run 400m dashes with pushups and squats in between. sometimes it'll be doing thing "every minute on the minute" for a given time, all sorts of cool variations.

the issue is that CF is so fucking dogmatic. the dumbasses have the audacity to claim that it's better for building muscle than bodybuilding, an activity built SOLELY AROUND MUSCLE BUILDING. ::)

i do a version of crossfit that lines up with my goals. it's not a "best for everyone" thing by a damn sight. if you want to get strong as an ox, do strongman or powerlifting. you wanna get big and ripped? bodybuilding. crossfit is for more "allover athleticism". it's what i do because i'm more interested in being able to do things than how i look in the mirror. that's all.

CF women n my gym are by far the hottest - no lie.   Thick ass and legs - work out like beasts - but they usually are not too friendly

Crossfit looks like where the last remenants of the american 90s liberal quasi-hippie movement has gone to die.  Dykes and beta males flock there for a chance to score with stuck up ex-Vasser/Weslyn graduates trying to find a meaning to their volvo-owning one-child bearing useless lives.

Lack of vertical old style leg presses, those old vertical leg presses come back in style every few years, but few companies make them anymore -

.

Could be worse, they could be taking up all the olympic bars (yes, this is a real photo) -

Yeah, the biggest injuries you see with it are Rhabdomyolysis (work induced muscles wasting), and things like slap tears/rotator injures, and the occasional knee injury. The first two are the most common.

I'm not a Crossfit hater, but if a person does take it up, they'd do well to find some of the old coaches like Dan John, John Welborn, Everett, or similar that left when it became big.

Bad program design, weak coaching, and general newness to fitness really does seem to rip a lot of averagefolks up. The ones that became Crossfit poster boys were generally good athletes before starting it.

I get sucked into these type of things all the time.  People enjoy bagging on it because it's just another thing to rip on.  I could say something like "Chaos, why not try the workout Fran...and provided you don't shit your pants...I don't see you getting it done in under 10mins."  Oh wait, that would be a melt down.  Right?  I 'competed' in bodybuilding for about 25yrs.  Talk about DOUCHE BAGS.  Fuck me.....I have NEVER seen a CF web site where there is a 1,000+ page discussion on who is better Rich Frohning or Matt Chan.  Yet we can sit here and argue back and forth who is better Ronnie or Dorian.   ::)

I am enjoying the competition aspect of it as well as getting stronger and having that enjoyment of training again.  I am 44yrs old and can't wait to do the games next year.  Adam....you bag on some of these things....whats the point of those "GetBig Challenges" then.  No point.  Why dont I have you come over to my house and do the roofing challenge?  I have a roof to tear off, and then you can carry all the new stuff up on a ladder...much more productive than your 100reps of squats.  Right?

BTW Joe...CF has been around since about 1974.  We have been through this about 1,000 times...there are more people in bodybuilding that are nut jobs than in CF.  There are going to be people who ALWAYS have the holier than thou outlook with whatever they do.  Unfortunately due to the web we all have to hear it.  I welcome ANYONE to do some of the stuff I do in my log and tell me it was a breeze.  Will you be stronger than me?  Some will be.  But hey, my workouts are 1,000x more enjoyable than "Monday : Chest/Biceps.  3 - 4 exercises for chest, 8 - 12 reps, blah blah blah blah"

I wonder how many people claim a "315lb squat" when they do it on a smith?  Thats not a real squat.  People call it a kipping pullup because they are differentiating it from a REAL pull up.

This was my workout today:

1000m Row
50 Thrusters 45" bar
30 CHEST TO BAR pull ups <----- see that...strict....NO KIPPING

10:14

Meltdown....stroke....ep ic crying....I suck cock...seems like Krankenstein loves the man juice...blah blah blah.  Right?

P.S.  BB.  You are right...and I have said this to Joe.  There are GREAT coaches and there are ones that should be punched in the face HARD.  I follow Rudy from Outlaw Crossfit, Glenn Pendlay, Kelly Starrett, and Everett.  Rhabdomyolisis can be caused by any number of conditions that damage the muscle.  So, the 100 rep workouts...welcome to potentially causing this.  Most of the time people are so dehydrated before they workout that they get this.

oo i almost wish i'd read this before i hit the gym. would have been a LOT smarter than that squat/pullup abomination i attempted.

side note: i don't do my CTB pullups super strict.  :-\  they're far from a butterfly kip, but i do that tiny bump at the bottom to get moving.

I think CF is a great idea - and it gets women actually lifting weights which is great - but the cultish following and some of the other bs os really off putting.

The women I have met at the races are awesome, hot, and totally cool.

time. CF is about things done quickly. that's how the majority of the games are ranked. it's how many reps/rounds you can do in X minutes or how fast you can do a given circuit. that's why a lot of them sound easy until you realize you're doing it as quickly as you can. 30 clean and jerks with 135 sounds easy, but doing it in less than two minutes isn't.

that's why kipping pullups exist. it's about speed. get your bar over the chin as quickly as you can. obviously techniques will be developed to facilitate this. it's the exact same reason the olympics went from presses to jerks: it's an efficient way of achieving the same end result, and it's a lot easier to judge. instead of arguing about whether or not there was a "kip" to the pullup or leg drive to the press, just get your chin over the bar or the bar to overhead lockout. long as you get that far, it's valid.

think about this, too: thanks to CF, things like squats, pullups, oly lifts, standing presses, and heavy kettlebell exercises are turning popular. you go into gyms and more and more of them are starting to have squat racks and bumper plates.

like anything, when it hits the mainstream you get the dogmatic shitstains who get all crazy about it. remember how in lifting circles for a while people refused to believe ANYTHING except HIT worked? or how about the nautilus wave? crossfit is, at least, something that turned real lifting into the thing to do, and not only that but it proudly proclaims that it's hard as opposed to the scads of "just 30 minutes a day three days a week!" DVD sets out there.

hahaha it's in adonis's challenge thread. i wanted to try getting 225x100 on squats and 100 pullups within 30 minutes. it was a stupid as fuck idea, i squatted on thursday and did a bunch of oly lifts yesterday, then went out drinking last night. but i'm a stubborn sumbitch so i went for it anyway, trying to do 10 rounds of 10 reps on each. was in the squats on set five and i just lost it. body was done, puked in a trash can, had to lie down for a while. wouldn't have gotten it in under 30 anyway.

Agreed 100%.    Not hating at all on CF.    I think its a great idea for people to mix it up.  However - i do see some things i really question in terms of safety vs benefit ratio

Like I said - tons of the women at the TM, Spartan, races ar CF chicks and they are seriously hot.   not skinny chicks, but muscular, fit, and friendly.

Good stuff my friend!

Although you were supposed to only do the Squats!  You increased the difficulty on us!  Maybe I will have to add the pullups in with the squats as part of the challenge.

Zach....

Thats "Jackie"....BTW, I have a pdf with a SHIT TON of conditioning workouts...want it?

All the people ripping on CF people for their "cult" attitudes.  Ummm...how about the HIT trainer cult?  The 'high volume' cult?  The "no carb" cult?  The "natural" cult?

I love that my workouts are never the same.  Legitimately NEVER the same.  Yeah, you could do that with bodybuilding..but with CF I have to say that there is so much more variety.  Just my opinion

Adam, perhaps you might like to see some of those conditioning workouts too....you seem to like challenges
