Joe Biden Sees No Legal Problem with Taxing Violent Video Games
There would be “no restriction on the ability to do that
"

by Lucy O'Brien MAY 14, 2013

At a gun legislation strategy meeting held at the White House recently, United States Vice President Joe Biden suggested there would be "no legal reason" why taxing violent media, including video games, would be an issue. This taxing of any kind of "violent images" could, of course, extend to film and television, as well.

The Vice President's declaration came in response to a suggestion made by Reverend Franklin Graham, who attended the meeting alongside 19 other religious leaders. According to Politico.com, attendees at the meeting said that Biden responded favourably to the Reverend's idea, going so far as to say there would be “no restriction on the ability to do that, there’s no legal reason why they couldn't."

It was suggested by Graham that proceeds of the tax would go towards victims of gun violence and their families, according to the website's sources.

As Geek.com correctly notes, this sort of concern is nothing new. The Obama Administration has funded research into the effects of violent video games on young people following the Sandy Hook tragedy, and is a common theme in the wake of any major national tragedy. At this point there's no indication that Graham's suggestion will come to fruition, with Vice President Biden eventually concluding that a study should be made on the effects violent video games have on developing brains.

Maybe we should have another Congressional investigation into baseball and violent video games, making Biden's friends wealthy.

They already have an age restriction on violent games. Why the hell would they tax the adults then? There is going to be another Boston Tea Party, if shit like this keeps happening.

Good point.
That is why we need limited government...so they perform necessary functions for society without over-reaching and infringing on our freedoms.  Limiting their power (no matter who is in charge, liberals and right wing fringe nuts) limits their ability to take our freedoms away.  Overburdening government is why many of our forefathers came to America, yet in the past decade more people (that haven't experienced oppression) are nudging government in that direction.  Think people, be careful what you ask for.

This country is getting more and more weird. We just need to bomb ourselves and start over from scratch. Wasn't this country supposed to be for the people and freedom?

I do not agree with using the tax code to target and punish things because you don't like them.  This should be illegal.

It's like I've told people that support some of the phaggot legislation restricting various consumptions...one of these days the object being regulated will be something you like, then you'll cry like Arvilla when Laura Lee got her butt smoked by Grant.

Only Republican voters were asked the video games question

What do you think is a bigger safety threat in America: guns or violent video games?
Guns ........................ ........................ ............... 14%
Video games ........................ ........................ ... 67%

National Rifle Association CEO and executive vice president Wayne LaPierre was also quick to blame violent video games for the events at the Sandy Hook, after it was found that shooter Adam Lanza may have played video games like "Call of Duty" and "Starcraft."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said Wednesday that Congress may be forced to take action to limit video game violence.

Speaking to an audience of around 500 in San Francisco, Feinstein, who led the charge in the Senate on an assault weapons ban, said the video game industry should take voluntary steps to make sure it does not glorify guns in the wake of the December mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. She added that if the industry does not, Congress is prepared to take action, according to the Associated Press.

Feinstein said that video games play, "a very negative role for young people, and the industry ought to take note of that."

"If Sandy Hook doesn't do it ... then maybe we have to proceed, but that is in the future," she added
