Average Hours Worked Per Week, Should it be Less?
« on: May 23, 2013, 11:19:54 AM »

FRED indicates the average is currently 33.7 hours.

Bertrand Russell seemed to think a 4 hour work day would be sufficient for society's needs.

Do you as an American work too much? Could you be as productive or perhaps even more so with less hours worked?

Bodybuilding Related (::)): I carry a fanny pack chalk full of protein bars (which, incidentally, taste like chalk) and a full cooler with 3 meals ready to microwave when I know it will be a long day at work.

8hr/day, 5-6days/wk is more than manageable.

I just don't like 12hr shifts, especially midnight.

We have boat loads of immigrants here who will suck your dick for a dollar, and then some.

Can't get a decent job because there are non.

Fucking immigrants have driven living/work standards to absolute shit because they come from absolute shit.

He also gave us his theory of descriptions in 1905 -- a theory that is still relevant to this day, despite certain of its limitations. I think the same applies to the ideas expressed in the article I linked to.

Well, society isn't as weird/brilliant as Bertrand. And they weren't as French, or Greek, or as 'griftery.'    ;D

The 40 hour work week is what many people strive for because it is associated with consistency and a solid job, but is 40 hours a week..8 hours a day 5 days a week with 2 days off ideal? Working a 9 to 5 means only having a few hours a day to yourself other than working or getting ready for work or driving to work and only 2 days off per week. This is quite a lot but is there a way to work less but without decreasing pay? Yes. In America there is a huge inequality of income. Some people work a few hours a week and make millions a year and some people work 60 hours a week and make 15k a year. This inequality is generally not due to the wealthier person having some innate quality or working 10000 times harder than the poorer person. The inequality is due to flaws in our economy and society which allows some people , due to circumstance or accident, to be super wealthy while others are super poor. This happens due to flaws in the system and the way things work. Idely everyone should work 20 hours a week and make enough to thrive but in America 10% of the population owns the majority o the wealth. There is only so much money in the system and if 10 people out of 100 own own 80% of the wealth then 90% of the people are left to fight over an increasingly small amount of income. Where does this lead? Increases poverty, increased unemployment, increased dissatisfaction, increased crime, increased conflict and suffering.

Most people probably don't get over four hours of real honest work done in an eight-our "work"day anyway.

I've read Bertrand Russell... the passage you're referring to comes from the "Conquest of Happiness".

I think Russell was romantic and naive in some respects and it shows in that book.

A bit delusional yes. He was one of the first advocates of sexual liberation. He had extremely open-minded views on marriage, especially for his time. We're talking early 20th century here.

One day his son's wife got fed up with their three kids so they abandoned them. Just like that.

Russell ended up having to raise them. As mentioned in his autobiography.

In a free vastly automated market the talented, who are a few, have to slave away and the untalented people are discarded and left on their own.

I am salary but I put in around 45-50 hours a week. When I travel especially to the west coast it goes between 50-60 hours.

Low working hours and less demand for physical effort during work is partly to blame for high obesity rates.

I think that worst part involves people that work all the damn time and their kids don't get much attention from them other than money. It also does suck that some people have to work 60-70 hours a week split over two jobs, low wages, no overtime.

I always hate to hear people talking about how much they love to work. I can see it in some instances where there is a true passion for what they do. Some fool making 30k saying he would go to work the next day if he won 300 million on a Powerball draw is ignorant.

Why do you need the nanny state to tell you how many hours a week to work?  If your job opprotunity requires more or less than you want....find a new one, lower your expenses or start your own business.  Sheesh, its these European socialist types that need 'daddy' to regulate every-fuckin-thing for them and then impose it on the rest of society so they don't feel like a lazy bastard.  "Gee Carl, I'd love to work more but you know those union rules...."  ::)

Your lifestyle choices dicates how many hours you work...take some self-responsibility.
