It seems like the topic of the importance of lifting big weights is one of the biggest misteries of bodybuilding

despite of all theories on the matter, it seems like most pros lift heavy ass weights

i find it a bit bewildering

It is actually good to mix it up you don't always want to lift heavy! It is good to have a light day where you use light weight and alot of intensity. The most important thing is form. If you can lift heavy ass weights with great form more power to you but still always good to mix it up and have a light day where you do crazy amount of reps it is great for seperation and getting more striations and cutts. heavy weights just gets you the size and mass. I know guys that are fucking jacked and they don't lift heavy everyday. They mix it up alot. You can do amazing things with light weights but you always have to do some heavy training as well. just keep the body guessing.

Why?

It seems that, for all of your admiration for Ronnie, you seem a bit reluctant to mimick his philosophy, in both training AND DIET.

Per Ronnie's latest column, "Most guys love to eat, too. But, they don't want to eat the right foods, and they sure don't want to eat them every two hours. It's a lot of money, and it's a lot of work to cook it all and make sure you always have it when you're supposed to eat it. Even well into my pro career, I wasn't eating enough. For one thing, I was worried about getting fat. (Now, where have I heard THAT before?) Plus, I just didn't know that eating more would give me any better results. When I started working with Chad Nicholls in 1998, he looked at what I was eating and had me increase the number of meals plus the amount of food I was eating in every meal.......

Nothing about my training changed, but I start getting bigger and bigger. That's when I knew I really should have been eating more all along. I would say the number one reason most guys never get as big as they want to is because they just don't eat enough.

I know guys that are fucking jacked and they don't lift heavy everyday. They mix it up alot. You can do amazing things with light weights but you always have to do some heavy training as well. just keep the body guessing.

Not to mention, your tendons and joints just need a break from time to time. If your diet and rest are on point, those breaks should be relatively few. But, you'll need them. Plus, you can substitute heavy weights with pre-exhaust supersets. They work WONDERS when you're in a rush, need a break from superheavy lifting, or if you don't always have access to lots of weights.

When I couldn't afford a gym membership, I worked out in the fitness room of the apartment complex where my girlfriend (now, my wife) stayed. It was a mutli-station machine; but, the weight stack only went to 200 lbs on the chest press/pulldown/flye part and only up to 300 lbs on the leg extension/leg press portion.

For example, by doing flyes and following that up immediately by the chest press, 200 lbs (on the press) felt like over 300 lbs.

MCWAY,

Haven`t you bulked enough by now?

Who said I was bulking now?

But, just to be clear, I am not competing now, nor do I plan on doing so in the immediate future. So, I have no need to be razor-ripped nor am I such at this time.

I am simply what I'd call normal: Abs visible but not shredded; somewhat defined but not "cut" or "ripped".

Whatever look you are most happiest with is the one you should strive for and it sounds like you are content.

Do you ingest a lot of calories still or did you back them down?

I believe I address this several years ago. Heck, I address this several MINUTES ago, on your thread.

I don't eat nearly as much as I did back in the day, for multiple reasons:

1) I'm older.
2) I'm not as active, outside the gym (i.e. no pinch-running for the the middle-age guys with bad knees in my church's softball league).
3) My metabolism isn't quite as fast.

Do I need 5000+ calories to grow now? No.

DID I need 5000+ to grow nearly 20 years ago? To borrow from the source of this thread's title, "YEAH, BUDDY!!!"  ;D

That seems to be a common theme with a lot of pro bodybuilders, from the oft-romantized 90s era. In their earlier years, they were ingesting enough food to feed a family of 5, with leftovers (i.e. Mike Francois, the late Nasser El Sonbaty, Dave Hughes, Jim Quinn, Gary Strydom).

But, once they get to a certain size, maintenance (even future growth) can be done with fewer calories.

My protein intake now is in the low-to-mid 200s. Back in the day, I'd go through that before dinner, easily exceeding 300 grams before day's end.

Who isn't scared of getting poor?

As for being bald, as I said years ago, if some of it goes, ALL of it goes. Razors are shaving cream are cheaper than Rogaine and toupees.
