I got no dog in this fight. Having said that, "finisher medals" are symptomatic of what's wrong w/ Western Society. It used to be the case that you only got a medal if you finished first, maybe 2nd or 3rd got something as well, but at least those people were probably competitive and may have got top honors on another day. I don't have a problem w/ that. Now? Everybody who competes gets a finishers medal regardless of their performance. People who "run" 6 hour marathons, which is basically a fast walk, get a medal, same as a guy who ran it in 2:30 but didn't sniff the top spot. "Run" a 5K in an hour? You get a finisher medal. When I was into running I would only accept class awards. I would never take a finisher medal. It's insulting to everyone involved. I also hate the thought that they give "participating" trophies to every kid on the team. I would tell my kid that but his mother thinks it's just great and it's not worth arguing about. The feminization of society is more or less complete.  

I loathe the trophy for everyone rule, especially for kids, as it doesn't teach them how to appreciate what it takes to earn something.   When I was in little league, getting an all star trophy was the greatest thing in the world to me.   I was proud of it.

But, I have no problem with getting shirts or a token to show you finished an event like the Tough Mudder.   The event has signs - "this is not a race, it's a challenge" and 25% of the partcipants don't finish, so there's no problem with getting something for completion, regardless of time.  Same for a marathon.
