In the wake of the recent disclosure of two classified U.S. surveillance programs, most Americans disapprove of the government collecting the phone numbers of ordinary Americans, but approve of its monitoring those suspected of terrorist activity, according to a new CBS News poll.

Seventy-five percent of Americans approve of federal agencies collecting the phone records of people the government suspects of terrorist activity, but a 58 percent majority disapproves of this type of data collection in the case of ordinary Americans.

Majorities of Republicans and independents oppose the government collecting phone records of ordinary Americans; Democrats are divided.

When asked if the government’s collection of Americans’ phone call records is a necessary tool to help find terrorists, a slight majority of 53 percent say it is.

There is broad support for the government monitoring the internet activities of those living in foreign countries. Seventy-two percent of Americans approve of this practice and there is agreement on this across party lines.

The Patriot Act was never designed to be an investigative tool for the government to go on a massive fishing expedition. Judicial oversight, notice requirements and the like were supposed to be written into the law as procedural safeguards for the rights of ordinary Americans. Back when that was the line, Democrats overwhelmingly disapproved of the Patriot Act.

Now that it's being used (illegally in my opinion) to farm data on hundreds of millions of innocent people, Democrats think its a necessary weapon in fighting terrorism (even though Obama said terrorism was defeated a few weeks ago). lololol

If you ever needed proof that one side of the aisle is morally and intellectually bankrupt, this poll takes the cake.

It's the same idiotic justification these morons use for empowering the TSA. Racial profiling is bad! Molesting grandma is fairness!

Or more appropriately, we need this massive, illegal, expansive, intrusive tool to "protect Americans"-- but securing the border is bad! We must collect data on innocent people while allowing blanket amnesty to illegal aliens in the name of "fairness".

EU warns US of 'grave consequences' from intel scandal
 
The EU has warned President Barack Obama's administration of "grave adverse consequences" to the rights of European citizens from a huge US Internet surveillance programme, officials said Wednesday.

Viviane Reding, the EU's Justice Commissioner, wrote a letter on Monday to US Attorney General Eric Holder demanding "swift and concrete" answers about the spy scheme when they meet in Dublin on Friday.

She set out seven detailed questions about the PRISM spy programme, which were leaked by whistleblower Edward Snowden and revealed by The Guardian and Washington Post newspapers last week.

"Programmes such as PRISM and the laws on the basis of which such programmes are authorised could have grave adverse consequences for the fundamental rights of EU citizens," she wrote.

Her questions to Holder include whether EU citizens were targeted by the US programmes, whether Europeans would be able find out whether their data has been accessed, and whether they would be treated similarly to US nationals in such cases.

Reding said that "given the gravity of the situation" she expected "swift and concrete answers to these questions" at her meeting with Holder.

Not surprising given recent revelations about the NSA, but as Michael Isikoff points out, the massive increase in requests for business records by the FBI under a provision in the Patriot Act, represents a sea change in the government's attitude toward privacy.




The FBI has dramatically increased its use of a controversial provision of the Patriot Act to secretly obtain a vast store of business records of U.S. citizens under President Barack Obama, according to recent Justice Department reports to Congress. The bureau filed 212 requests for such data to a national security court last year - a 1,000-percent increase from the number of such requests four years earlier, the reports show.

The FBI's increased use of the Patriot Act's "business records" provision - and the wide ranging scope of its requests -- is getting new scrutiny in light of last week's disclosure that that the provision was used to obtain a top-secret national security order requiring telecommunications companies to turn over records of millions of telephone calls.



Taken together, experts say, those revelations show the government has broadly interpreted the Patriot Act provision as enabling it to collect data not just on specific individuals, but on millions of Americans with no suspected terrorist connections. And it shows that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court  accepted that broad interpretation of the law.

"That they were using this (provision) to do mass collection of data is definitely the biggest surprise," said Robert Chesney, a top national security lawyer at the University of Texas Law School. "Most people who followed this closely were not aware they were doing this.  We've gone from producing records for a particular investigation to the production of all records for a massive pre-collection database. It's incredibly sweeping."
