Casey V's workout routine with training poundages included
« on: June 14, 2013, 01:43:11 PM »
i gotta call bullshit on many of these, especially the barbell curl of 20 reps with 200 pounds and the barbell bench of 20 reps with 350 pounds

Here is Casey’s three day a week routine:

Legs (conventional method)

1.) Leg Press 750 lbs. x 20 reps.

2.) Leg Extension – 250 lbs. x 14 to 20 reps.

3.) Full Squat – 505 x 14-20.

4.) Leg Curl – 150 x 14-20.

These exercises are done one after the other without the usual rest associated with such large poundages. I would like to see anyone else duplicate this.

Lats (Nautilus machine)

1.) Pullover – 3 sets of 20 reps.

2.) Circular Pulldown – 3 sets of 20.

3.) Chins – 3 x 20.

Each exercise is done in the normal set fashion.

Deltoids (conventional and Nautilus)

1.) Standing Laterals – 60 lbs. x 3 sets of 20 reps.

2.) Barbell Press Behind Neck – 215 lbs. x 3 sets of 20 reps.

3.) Nautilus Lateral Raise – 3 x 20.

You will note that two movements are done with barbell and dumbells and one on the Nautilus.

4.) Barbell Shrug – 280 lbs. 3 x 20.

Chest (conventional)

1.) Barbell Bench Press – 350 lbs. 2 x 20.

2.) Incline Barbell Press – 225 lbs. 3 x 20.

3.) Dips – 100 lbs. 3 x 20.

4.) Cable Crossover – 40 lbs. 3 x 20.

Arms (Nautilus)

1.) Conventional Barbell Curl – 200 lbs. 1 x 20.

2.) Combination Triceps and Biceps exercise – 120 lbs. 1 x 20.

3.) Triceps Extension (similar to pulley pushdown) – 110 lbs. 1 x 20.

4.) Compound Triceps movement – 1 x 20.

Calves (conventional)

1.) One Legged Calf Raise – 85 lb. dumbell 4 x 50.

I have never seen that in print. The workout I saw in print in his prime was amazing but that one listed is just bs. This one I can believe. Barely.

June 10,1971 Casey Viator did this workout.
One leg giant set with no rest.
1. Leg press on a universal machine. 750 for 20 reps
2. leg extensions on a universal machine 225 pounds for 20 reps.
3. Full squat 1x13 reps with 502 pounds

Rest

Then did these two exercises super set style.

4. Leg curl on universal. 1 x 12 175 then drop set to 150 for 10 reps.
5. one leg calf raise 3 x15 with a 40lbs dumbbell.

Rest

He then went on to upper body.
6. Nautilus pullovers 1 x 11 with 400lbs
7. Behind neck Nautilus 1 x 10 with 200lbs
8. Rowing on Nautilus machine 1 x 10 with 200lbs
9. Pulldown behind neck nautilus 1 x 10 210lbs.

Rest

10. Straight arm laterals with dumbbells 1 x 9 40 lbs super set with number 11
11. Press behind neck with a barbell 1 x 10 185lbs.

Rest
12. Nautilus bicep machine 1 x 8 reps with 110lbs super set with number 12.
13. Chins body weight 1 x 12

Rest

14. Nautilus tricep extensions. 1 x 9 reps 125lbs super set with number 15
15. Body weight dips for 22 reps.

Claimed time to complete was 41 minutes.

Yes, that looks like the one published in Iron Man (and there is an article in MD as well).  Note that the legitimate workout is only one cycle (1 set each).

QFT, I can't believe how many can't believe that Casey trained with volume for his best ever condition. Even Mentzer said he was training with volume.

I could see the circuit being completed with a min or 2 between sets with the exception of #3 full squats at 505, maybe 14-20 if that exercise went 1st no way AFTER the leg presses and extensions and NO rest, your legs would be on fire. Maaaaaybe if the squats went 1st and the leg presses went 3rd...

I met Casey. He is from here. He was one of the strongest BB back in the day. Did u see the size of his forearms from curling that heavy wt? None of that synthol shit there.  He was a true beast at a young age.

I don't think you realize the training back then, it wasn't all machines like now. It was mostly barbells and dumbbells, that's why they were thicker and stronger back then. Very few machines. You develop thickness and strength like that on machines, despite what basil thinks.

well you're right about barbells pwning the fuck outta machines, but still benching 350 for 20 reps at a bodyweight of around 220 or so :-\

but i suppose it's possible if he was doing them touch and go style and rather loose form

he also supposedly did dips for reps with 300 pounds around his waist

Ok, and against popular belief and I've said thisbefore, bodybuilders trained hard and heavy back then, it was more of a priority than drugs. They trained twice a day, everyday. At least for us,legs was was a 3-4 hour Saturday affair, as an example. Today, there is very little work ethic, the work ethic today is taking their next shot at a certain time.

One of the main problems with bodybuilding is when the amount of weight is listed. In bodybuilding you should make the exercise as hard as you can and not the easiest you can make it. An example of this is this writer for Ironman magazine. He said he uses 225 for the press behind the neck. A video of him doing it shows him stopping at a little below the top of his head. Hell, anyone could use a lot of weight with that range of motion. You look at many bodybuilders from the 70's and they brought the bar down to their traps and then pushed it out adding another 12 inches or so to the movement. Simple physics shows who is doing the most work. I can hear the cries now how the press behind the neck is a shoulder killer. Maybe I should have used squats to make my point.

If bodybuilders were runners they would do all their miles on a bicycle and say they did 10 miles in some amazing time.

Exactly, its not about hitting a certain number of reps, its abut getting the muscle to fail as quickly as possible.

I read an MMI interview with Casey where he said he used to get an erection when posing on stage.

Kinda strange. Strange that it happened and strange that he sort of bragged about it. ???

Edit. Found it with google.

Quote
Sometimes people ask me if I would get excited when
I posed. Yes, there is some type of excitement in standing in front
of a crowd of 3000 in your skivvies, little posing trunks, I could
get a semi-boner with all those people looking at me. I'd go off into
my own world and start to get excited sexually, so I'd have to try to
control it, instead of having the little head control things. There's
no jock strap in posing trunks, so it's "bone appetit" what you're
looking at, baby, that's it! Excuse me, I'm pretty much an animal

At the link where I found the quote there's also a supposed Tom prince quote. :-X

Quote
I am especially noted for my massive, sweeping quads, so when
posing on stage, many in the audience are focused mostly at my crotch
area. When the sweat begins to run off your body in rivulets and the
pose oil heats up under all those lights, it is next to impossible not
to get aroused and often quite hard with all those admiring eyes
zeroing in on you. One time at the NOC, I got such a roaring erection,
I feared I might split right out of those stretched and super-tight
briefs. Any bodybuilder who says he has not experienced this at some
time is either a liar or sexless. It is totally natural, universal and
an integral part of the muscle scene. And it matters not if those
adoring eyes are from males or females. It's all part and parcel of
the same libido. Hope I am not being too open here but what the hell,
that is exactly how it is

that's for sure, but most elite bodybuilders are head cases

in that article he also bragged about how a rich German businessman hired him as his own personal bodyguard while he was in the states and that he was "packing some heat" which in american slang means that he was carrying a concealed gun
