Bruce competed at a time when drug testing was almost none existent. He was tenth place in the 72 olympic decathalon and won and set a world record in 76 (after learning a great deal in Germany in 72).

I am just amazed and vexed that he has gone from that to where he is now in his 60's.

It is interesting to read everyone's take on Bruce's supposed situation. My guess is there are none among us who have ever seriously considered gender reassignment. Clearly those of us who have never been there, have no idea what plays into such a decision. I doubt it is one anyone would take lightly though.

I am the first to admit that I just don't get it. For one thing, I would make a very ugly female. As a male, I look okay, not movie star handsome or anything, but passable. Imagine a female with giant hands, enormous feet, a fat nose and a heavy brow....not a pretty vision. I hope Bruce is better equipped to play the female role than I am.

As much as I have huge difficulty understanding the hysteria that accompanies gender reassignment, I get that there are some circumstances when it may seem like a good solution to a complex problem. A great book on a related subject is the Pulitzer Prize winning book Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides about a person who was born a hermaphrodite and whose parents want them to undergo gender assignment surgery. It is kind of the opposite of gender reassignment surgery because they already have aspects of both genders.
