According to reports in Brazil, referee Otavio Jordao da Silva (20) fatally stabbed footballer Josenir dos Santos Abreu (30) during a heated moment of a match.

Santos Abreu is believed to have argued and then struck the referee after being unhappy with a decision.

It is believed the referee was carrying a knife throughout the match and fatally stabbed the player in retaliation.

Santos Abreu was rushed to hospital but died from injuries on the way.

Outraged by the incident, some spectators then apparently decided to inflict a gruesome revenge on the referee.

According to reports, the referee was tied up, beaten, stoned and quartered. They then put his head on a stake and planted it in the middle of the pitch.

That's it folks, cancel the Brazilian World Cup, easy to find another country at the last minute, many other countries have already hosted the World Cup and so have everything in place, this is beyond disgraceful.

Cancelling now would mean Brazil will be financially crippled for the next century after recouping none of their WC spending

Yeah, that's bullshit - I'd love to see the video of a ref stabbing a player. Is it possible that all cameras and cell phones in the stadium were ~~stolen~~ confiscated by the police as evidence?

A decapitated referee was the barbaric ending to a soccer game in Brazil. The decapitated referee's head was placed upon a stake in the middle of the soccer field, according to USA Today on July 6, 2013. This violence in Brazil at this soccer game plays out as just surreal, as it started with the referee stabbing a player.

The referee was attacked and stoned by enraged spectators who quartered his body after he stabbed a player in the heat of an argument. Referee Otavio da Silva expelled player Josenir Abreu from the game, which resulted in a fist fight. It was then that da Sliva took out a knife during this fight and stabbed Abreau, who died from the stab wound on his way to the hospital.

Abreu's friends and relatives stormed the field to get to the referee. This is when they stoned him and “quartered his body.” They took his decapitated head and put it on a stake for all to see in the middle of this soccer field. There was only one suspect arrested in this horrendous crime.

This sounds like a story of violence that was out of a history book from centuries ago, but it isn't. This happened in Brazil in 2013. While the sport of soccer is taken very seriously in Brazil, this is very scary, as it seems to show just how far fans will go for this sport. The ref should have been put up on murder charges for stabbing the player. This public decapitation is just hard to wrap your mind around. This shouldn't happen, not in today's day and age.

mob mentality... imagine if some referee ran on the Bball court and fatally stabbed a top NBA player in the NBA finals... would some over-eager policeman cap him? it's very possible.
