It's obviously something to do with prolonged drug use. The receptors in the muscles in those areas (arms, legs especially) could potentially become "desensitised" at some point to exogenous anabolic hormones (steroids, growth hormone). The muscles begin to atrophy while still retaining vascularity and paper thin skin. I suppose guys with "palumboism" still have large arms compared to average folk but in comparison to other parts of their body and compared to what it was in the past the results are drastic.

Palumboism is definitely not as obvious or as common in some of the older bodybuilders (maybe growth hormone plays a large role?) and this could be attributed to the fact that they never used drugs in the same heavy dosages and for the same prolonged periods of time as many of the more recent guys. Arnold used steroids throughout most of his acting career as well so that could explain his "palumboic" arms.

I'd go with nerve damage from too many delt shots and years of injecting toxic shit directly into the bis and tris .. muscles shorten from scar tissue, nerves get severed and you lose the ability to contract / fire. Add in shoulder issues from training like a retard for decades (see the GasBerry lateral raises) and there's probably a lot of damage there

slin and hgh must be doing something nasty too, growing the gut even larger while the arms shut down?

Zane looks great.  He lives here in the San Diego area now.  I've been to his house to pick up some signed books for a friend/brother.  No, I was not invited in and did not expect to be but my son and I were both welcomed and impressed by this man's demeanor.  Pearl lives up in the area of Medford, Oregon.  Hope to meet him one day.   Met Dave Draper a couple of times and he is a great guy with a powerful physique, even now.

With regard to what some call "old man triceps", I think its pretty much a fact that most men don't have large triceps.  In real life I think that the biceps are used much more often than the triceps and in bodybuilding we tend to train it hard because it has three heads vs the two heads of the bicep, therefor it must be the larger of the two.

In real life, it does not appear so.

simple muscle atrophies with age (and lower doses) which makes arms shrink, while the gut just keeps accumulating intra-abdominal fat and growing bigger.  Also as we age more fat accumulates intra-abdominally and less subcutaneously.

I think Pearl was 55 in that picture. Zane arms look weird compared to how they looked for decades. I wonder if he used oil prior to that picture? If you get a chance to read Pearl's autobiography it's a great read. He has led an incredible life. Self made wealthy guy.  Wrestler, musician, soldier, antique car restorer, author, gym owner, and antique collector. Told every top bodybuilder he was coming out of retirement when he was over 40 years old to find out who was the greatest bodybuilder. He was in outstanding shape weighing over 240lbs with a tight waist to beat Oliva in the Universe. Arnold stayed away due to the federation wars. He still gets up 4AM or earlier to work out out in a dream barn gym.

You may be on to something here.  Weider Principles may counteract the onset of Palumboism.  The NIH should be funding getbig to investigate this.

Haha seriously.  This is clearly some kind of medical phenomena that has yet to be explained by the scientific community...I wonder what Palumbo thinks about this being named after him

A hair transplant seems cheaper. Could always get a O'Hearn rug and just tack it on there.

Yes, I agree, Bill Pearl was and still is one of the true legends of the iron. He was a fantastic bodybuilder and also had the strength to back it up too with some very impressive deadlifts and squats and his oldschool strongman displays. He also comes across as a real gentlemen and is a great representative of bodybuilding and strength sports.
