A Florida man who held the world record for fastest speed on a motorcycle was killed over the weekend when he crashed at 287 miles per hour.

Bill Warner, who crashed during a speed trial in Maine, expressed some worry about the winds minutes before his last run. Experienced racers who witnessed the crash suspected mechanical difficulties were to blame.

Witnesses said Warner was going 287 m.p.h when his bike suddenly veered hard to the right and went off the runway. Witnesses said he was launched 40 feet into the air and 100 yards down the track. Warner was conscious and talking as he was taken to the hospital, but was pronounced dead at the hospital one hour after the crash.

I wonder if the solid side fairing on that bike contributed to the crash? It could be a sail at that speed.

Warner was taking part in "The Maine Event" at Loring Air Force Base before he crashed just before 10 a.m. He was conscious and was said to be talking after the crash, but died of his injuries an hour and 15 minuts later at a hospital
