The "I'm Stressed" Excuse for Fatness
« on: July 19, 2013, 03:17:09 AM »
Was talking to an obese friend and when the subject of his weight came up, he gave me the "I get stressed and I eat" excuse. It's a versatile excuse as it can always be used and it turns the perp into a victim.

I told him everyone has stress and that he's gonna have stress his whole life, but he came back with studies about stress levels and overeating.

The truth is that he's a "gourmand," the type who watches the cooking channel and always talks about food and restaurants. The bottom line is that he's fat bacause he loves to eat.

Is there any hope for people like this?

I do not think its an excuse. When I get stressed out I DONT eat. So its possible that people may overeat when stressed out.

The excuse is not, "I eat when I am stressed out." The excuse is, "I know I eat a lot when I get stressed out, I just dont want to figure out how to change that behavior and work around it."

Most people rely on something when stressed but there's way better options out there than food. Sex, cigarettes, drugs and alcohol are far better options.

He is correct. There different types of stress that the body reacts to. It's how you handle the stress. Before anyone starts with "His lack of willpower is sickening" although thats a huge factor, there are still a lot of reasons of why people are overweight or Obese.

Maybe in some exceptional cases eg those with medical problems.

I do not think its an excuse. When I get stressed out I DONT eat. So its possible that people may overeat when stressed out.

The excuse is not, "I eat when I am stressed out." The excuse is, "I know I eat a lot when I get stressed out, I just dont want to figure out how to change that behavior and work around it."
point blank, people don't want to change their behaviors, but they want the body..which is why that stomach stapling/lap band surgery is becoming popular. People want that magic pill and are too lazy/hard headed to change their eating behaviors and to be active. Hell, it even costs less than the surgery!

I'm sure you've had experience with clients giving you this excuse. So, your opinion is appreciated, but, if he knows the problem, doesn't it still come down totally to willpower? Just because you eat when you're stressed doesn't mean you HAVE to do so.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

Extreme stress makes you not hungry, and just a want to sleep feeling ...

Plus...

Exercise lowers stress levels and increases appetite, while making one look good.

People and their justifications...  ;)
Men seem to get stressed and stop eating, women get stressed and comfort eat.

Seems to be the way
