Ass to the ground.  Looks like he had a few more in him.  What would he have squatted if he had ended his career powerlifting?

In one of those videos of Reza's squats the cameraman says it's his second set of squats in that workout so it must feel pretty light and easy for him.  ;D

The difference between a secure, confident strong weightlifter and some schmuck who has too much to prove is stunning. Must...kill myself...for that 1 kilo record...in a non competition lift.

Both of them, Mendes and Reza are cripples now but Reza was in a car accident and has 2 olympic gold medals. The superior athlete is the one who knows when to take it easy.

Why are the both cripples now? Just the heavy lifting tore their bodies up?

A little bit of an overstatement but Reza quit because of the accident and probably didn't have motivation to continue and Mendes has been in rehab for quite sometime because of his hip I think. Don't know if he can truly train hard with that kind of injury at such a young age.

Mendes bounced the weight...not so much Rezazadeh (granted Mendes had more weight).

He did that easily - quads went well below parallel on the second rep.

something ive never considered before, but would the stress on the legs not also include the (considerable!) weight of his torso? He was a ridiculously strong man in all areas of lifting

There are no great old Olympic sprinters. There are no great old NFL running backs. There are no great old marathoners winning races. Being the top of a real sport takes youth.

No great Olympic lifter, or ANY athlete for that matter.

Mendes isn't busted out, he simply doesn't have the free time/money/etc.... to devote to the sport. He has a chronic wrist injury and just had a labral tear repaired, but the above is a big piece of the puzzle. He's working 60 - 70 hours a week. Also the classes he will try for are tough, it's a long road for him.

These are current for him -

.

.

They might try him as a #105 lifter.

They're about a month after the tear surgery

As to the first question, Rezazadeh probably could've gotten low 800's at a raw powerlifting meet with no wraps or belt. If you gave him some time, wraps, and a belt, he could flirt with a #1000.

I think he could put in a decent run, but I don't see high Olympic levels.

shane hamman, a squat world record holder

has seen rezazadeh train in person

he spoke with great admiration, awe and respect about rezazadeh

pretty much shane was not up to his level in terms of brute strength, nevermind technical
