If you don't have back problems and you they don't yield gains you can skip em.
Most folks have to do them forever because their backs start acting when they don't.

Weider introduced them to BB because he knew they are a gateway drug to schmoeville.

Looks like the dead lift is the exercise of choice for you.

I rarely did dreads, even before my 5 back surgeries. I was able to aquire a thick back without them. Everyone is different.

If the goal is strictly to look pretty, then I see no need to include deadlifts in the program.

Bodybuilding wise they are great for thickening the lower back but thats about it.
If you also want to be strong (who wouldnt) they are very valuable excercise.

I like deadlifts but don't think they are a necessary part of a bodybuilding program.

Partial deadlifts make my traps grow more than shrugs. I do rack pulls from the knee.

I rarely do them anymore since i quit power lifting.  I do hang cleans and power cleans, but very rarely do i practice deadlifts.

For me, i think doing some sort of clean or deadlift is important to keeping my body strong, but they aren't really required if you just want to look muscular IMO.

Big mistake.

IMO the best bodybuilding exercise on the planet.

In fact there is not one single fiber in your back that is not covered when doing deadlift.

One day I decided to skip my back workout and just do deadlifts and only deadlifts. I did 15 sets of 405lb X 10 reps each set in 1 hour.

I could not move my arms upwards, could not move my neck, could not tie my shows for almost a week.

LATS=DESTROYED

TRAPS=DESTROYED

TERES MAJOR=DESTROYED.

NEVER IN MY LIFE HAD I FELT THIS SORENESS THROUGHOUT MY ENTIRE BACK.

There is no such thing as a better exercise then deadlifts. They are king of all exercises.

I agree 100%.

Some of the best gains of my life were when i used to pull heavy once a week or two.

If you had to pick one exercise, it should be deads.

Did them for 7 1/2 years straight maybe. I put on lots of size but its possible I would have without them. I haven't done them in a year and a half because my lower back started to hurt and I decided it wasn't worth it anymore.

  • there can only be one...
Deadlifts
Do them if you want size and a big thick back
...
If you're a beach muscle lifter just keep working triceps and biceps 3 times a week
choice is an illusion

i always did a very power-lifting oriented type of training, so obviously a lot of deadlifts

my max was 240 kg raw, but my back looked like SHIT

in March this year i had a pretty serious knee injury and couldn't walk for a month, afterwards obviously a bit of rehab and wasn't able to go hard on the big 3

at the time i was devastated, but now i think dropping the deadlift and switching to high volume was actually great for my back in terms of size and looks

i love power-lifting, but it's shit for the physique

btw out of curiosity i did deads yesterday just to see my current max (after ~3 months of not doing them) and managed to pull 220 kg, was really surprised actually

This!

To this day, I still have every week 1 "back workout" and 1 "deadlift workout."  I use my dead workout a my lower rep day, and my regular back workout as my higher rep/hypertrophy day. I simply can't do both in the same workout or I feel I'm compromising one of the two significantly.

Well we are not talking doing singles and double here, which is clearly the culprit to your problems, we are talking modest sets of ten reps.

This^^^^^ about sums it up.

Don't do them if you want a beach body, you want to be monsters, deads are a must.
