Having done this job years ago, as young buck, I can say that if you aren't a jerk when you start, dealing with drunks on a regular basis will make it very difficult for you to not become one.

that kind of sucker punching is why I don't be letting people in my 5 foot radius.

If someone is your face YOU HAVE ALREADY HALF LOST THAT FIGHT because you can be suckered. With 5 feet of space, and your eye on him, you at least have some reaction time.

If I'm 6 inches from someone and shit is getting hectic, I need to step back 5 feet and reassess if I need to be in that room.

I always get respect from bouncers when I go out,I know most of them and the ones I dont know they take a look at me and realize that I am as big as they are but in shape.
