Iron man.

Geezer knows how to fill the gaps and doesn't just mimic the rhythm guitar or drums.  Very few bass players can really play and give bass lines character.

Easy for me.

The great Steve Harris (for the Maiden fans out there).

And Les Claypool of course (did anyone even mention him...jesus...)

Yeah, liked Claypool until I figured out he was a stoner trying to copy Tony Levin.  ;D

Andy Fraser (No homo)

Free, IMO, the most underrated band, ever. They were the best of the best:

John paul jones, mostly due to his legacy and such.

However the best as a musician I think is Jaco.

And the bass player I'd wanna be is james jamerson, dude was in the perfect time, with the perfect job, with the perfect lines.

Jaco's son Felix plays a mean base too. Saw him play with Jeff Coffin at a friend's music school.

Bass players are just failed guitarists

most of them.   Some are extremely obnoxious artists too, just trying to be weird and alternative.

Me, I consider myself the GLUE that holds the band together.

I'm better than 99% of the guitarists I play with, on guitar.  But my role is so much more.  I keep the drummer calm.  I control dynamics.   I give the guitarist room to shine and quickly take it away if he gets too obnoxious.  My little pauses and slide-in notes tell the singer what to do.

I also book/own PA so I make rules.  :)   I could play lead guitar 7 nights a week, but then I'd have a hard time dealing with a douche-bag rhythm section.  I get to control more when I'm on bass.  I create dynamics in every band... Or I replace the musicians lol.

Les Claypool

To name a few, gotta think about it! Gotta put Paul McCartney on there!

And then one of the guys, who have been inspiration for all modern bass players, and with one nice song. It starts quite slowly, so be patient:
