Kidney cancer (serious post)

Anyone familiar with papillary renal cell carcinoma?

Stepfather has it bad. Spread to his bladder and lungs. Superior casa vena tumor is wrapping around. Burst a cyst picking something up at home which indicated to me that things are evaluating quicker than I can comprehend them. Right kidney removed last May. Final patho report notes new tumors at surgical site and fast progression.

I told myself to stay strong especially for my mom, but it cut me down like a bitch when he told me his biggest disappointment was not being able to watch his grand babies grow up and my bro and I explaining to the kids why grandpa is dying.

I know, Dear Diary right. Just sucks knowing it's not like other cancers where he'll get chemotherapy, lose his hair, take some heartwarming pictures all fucked up and bounce back with a success story. He's just going to die and we get to watch helplessly. Not even 50 years old.

He'll be taking sunitinib and I'm looking for clinical trials for him to participate in. He was going to do one already but we redid his pathophysiology report and they basically said he's getting fucked way faster than they'd hope so we changed the course of action. My family comes to me to be there rock but I feel like helpless and overwhelmed. I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.

Aunt died of it, really fast too. They did an op to remove it but it was too late, its a bitch of a disease. The cperimental chemo just ruined her last month IMO. Hope your stepdad has a better prognosis

sunitinib works very well for RCC, but usually clear cell.

Sad news mate - sorry to hear.

My dad died from cancer (not kidney) and I know this sounds shitty, but at some point it helps to focus on helping the person to die well, rather than fuck them around with all sorts of gruesome drugs in order to milk another 2 months of discomfort. I don't mean this in a negative way - just telling you it helped me a lot when I was able to switch my thinking like this.

And with cancer, you do get a chance to say goodbye. I had a friend who lost both parents within 3 days of one another to heart attacks. I don't think she ever fully recovered from the shock of that.

Great post!  Everything I wanted to say. My heart goes out to Dustin and his family and anyone who is or has gone through a battle with cancer, either themselves or a family member.

My father also died from this.  He was an alcoholic for many years.  He started drinking when he was 16 and stopped in his early 50's.  In 2011 he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer... by then, the cancer had spread everywhere.  He died of kidney and liver failure in late 2011, he was 71.

Lesson learned:  Don't drink alcohol.  Don't fall victim to the social pressures and the strategic marketing.  It's toxic... even in small amounts.

doctors wont ever tell you about heme-iron or they will face scrutiny from there superiors and go under audits and lose there jobs. thats how the medical community works

im giving you the solution but its hard to get people to not eat meat

notice all the shitty replies in this thread except mine (offering a solution) instead of emotionally based condolences wich is cliche when someone is faceing a life ending situation

now think about that for a second

do you really want to hear the same ol (hang in there buddy") or are you actually going to take a natural approach instead of the medically advised chemo wich has a higher fail rate than success?

shut the fuck up read my post

respecting someone that is dieing will NOT save there life or give them any tools to over come it

like when my back was hurting bad my dad said 'stop being a pussy and do somethin about it'

if you havent manipulated your diet then you really havent done anything to fight the problem

buddy,

its appointed to every man once to live and twice to die. we must die that spiritual death to ourselves every day. Live right in front of him and in front of others. its not going to be easy. nothing i can say or do or anyone on here for that matter will help.

I agree with that.  What did my father in was the chemo and radiation treatments... it killed his immune system.  They literally "treat" cancer patients to death... especially if you are past 65 and not working anymore (ie. not paying taxes).

alot ALOT of people are ready to die and be on there way out, they are angry at life, you will never convice these people to stop eating meat NEVER

a loving caring person can EASILY change there eating habits

you can ask a meat eater , why do you eat meat? ("it tastes good, gives me energy")

then you ask but you have cancer will you stop eating meat ('no i just cant'-is there reply

a doctor will never advise alterior methods like avoiding heme-iron they will face audits by there superiors and the doctors life will be fucked career fucked. HOW MANY TIMES DO I FUCKING HAVE TO SAY THIS

many young doctors go into the feild with good intentions but quickly realize they must follow protocol

people just have no clue about doctors. its a shame people dont investigate for themselves

i know for fact dustins family is typical american family who loves meat unfortunatley typical families fall under typical cancer rate statistics

I don't mind junk food from time to time, but I prefer stuff that's closer to real food than what's in fast food.

But, I won't be a pretentious little bitch. Anyone who says a nice fat Big Mac is gross is a hypocritical liar. They're fucking delicious. I love double Big Macs with extra large fries.

you can get past the taste part when health improves and realize no animal is having to die for your dinner tonite.

cooking is an art eventually you will make more delicious meals than a burger can provide, its not easy to do that but it is easy to get off meat if you care about your life and not how something tastes so much

Thanks, guys. And don't worry, I knew Falcon would recommend avoiding heme iron. It's to be expected.

They removed his right kidney so finding low protein, healthy organic meals has been a bit of a bitch. He grew up on the Island in a small town doing nothing but drinking and shooting guns but he's done really well cleaning up his diet. He didn't eat particularly shitty before, but now that there's zero room to fuck around he's really pulled in the reigns. Mom's always cooked well and went vegetarian a few years ago so she's been all right with the meal prep. I've been going to the farmer's markets too and connecting with local growers because we have awesome product and livestock that I should really take advantage of. It's expensive but every bit helps. I've also spent the summer building a small garden too so it's nice eating things grown by my own hand and sharing it with family.

It's tough to know how much time he has left. It's really difficult seeing the oncologist and nephrologist so infrequently and trying to piece things together. Just visiting the parents lots to help with chores and keep everyone in good spirits. I never knew how much of a weird dynamic it would be to try taking in all of this but not patronizing him and changing the way we act. I was honestly preparing for a different outcome. I thought he'd be treated with chemo, we'd tough out a shitty period and then he'd bounce back. Change of plans I guess... trying to not be too much of a bitch because I know it happens to millions, but it's a different change of plans for sure. We're expecting November 17th and my bro just had another baby girl so it's really put a lot of weight on his shoulders.

Hopefully we find some sort of complimentary therapy or a good clinical trial where he'll get a higher level of care. Sure helps to know people in the health care industry though. Getting awesome care from the local hospital and the BC Cancer Center. All we can do is handle things as gracefully as possible and make the best of our time. 8)
