Ga. Insurance Commissioner: Obamacare to Force 'Massive Rate Increases Up to 198 percent'
2:28 PM, Jul 30, 2013 • By DANIEL HALPER

n a press release today, Georgia insurance commissioner Ralph T. Hudgens warns that, because of Obamacare, "Georgia insurance companies are demanding massive rate increases up to 198 percent for some individuals." Hudgens claims this runs contrary to President Obama's promise to "Americans that Obamacare would lower rates."

As a result, Hudgens "announced today that he has requested an emergency delay of the filing deadline for Obamacare rates from U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and for her to show reasons why the rates submitted by Georgia health insurers are not justified by Obamacare," his state office explains.

The commissioner of insurance office explains:

Companies opting to participate in the Exchange have provided the Department with evidence that their rates are justified and in compliance with Georgia law, citing the new Obamacare mandates as the reason.

In a letter faxed to Sebelius on Monday, Hudgens sought protection for Georgians by requesting an emergency 30 day delay of submission of his rate review to allow Department staff additional time to analyze the increases.

Hudgens adds, “I was always skeptical of Obamacare. ... But I never imagined that it would lead to rates being doubled or tripled. ... Increases of this magnitude will make coverage less affordable and increase the number of uninsured in Georgia.”

Even Hudgens admits that 198% is an extreme example that only occurs under one very specific set of circumstances.

The fact that ANYONE has their rates going up is a lie from Obama who promised a 2500 rate reduction

yep, down 50% in NYC
I posted it yesterday

seems the problems are in the red states who didn't bother to put any effort into setting up the exchanges.    In other words they did nothing and now they are pointing out how their own incompetence isn't working

I see you have no response to the fact that Republican run states like Florida and Georgia failed to put any effort into the exchanges and therefore have shitty results where as states like CA and NY have aggressively set up the exchanges which are actually working at reducing rates

Ohio officials: Rates to increase under health law
Associated Press ^  | 8-2-2013 | Ann Sanner

Posted on Friday, August 02, 2013 11:25:27 AM by MrChips

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Ohioans using the new marketplaces created by the federal health care law will pay on average 41 percent more for their monthly premiums, state insurance officials said Thursday, though federal subsidies will defray some of that cost.

Small businesses can expect their monthly rates to rise an average of 18 percent, officials said.

The increases are partly due to consumers receiving more benefits under the plans than previously available.

The details from the Ohio Department of Insurance were the first glimpse from the state of what consumers could see should they purchase private insurance in the marketplaces created by President Barack Obama's health care law, also called exchanges.

Open enrollment in the plans starts Oct. 1, and coverage takes effect in January. That's when virtually everyone in the country will be required by the law to have health insurance or face fines.

Exchanges will offer individuals and their families a choice of private health plans resembling what workers at major . . . .

Haha...

Maybe Republican leadership is smarter than we thought?  Maybe their strategy all along was to let this pass so that everyone liberal and conservative would come crawling back to be rescued from this... lol

small business owner from Chicago IL checking in.  no one hopes you're right more than i do.  whenever i talk to liberals around here (and there are a shitload) and they get on the topic of obamacare, i always make them repeat at least 3 times when they tell me that in 2014 my rates will decrease.  and they stick by their word.  they PROMISE me.  they are so smitten with this president they KNOW that what he says is true.  again.  no one hopes that they and you are right more than me.  but mark my word, if my January and February insurance bills are higher or not any different come 2014 I will not hesitate to remind them how fucking stupid they are.  and if they are lower, I will not hesitate to tell them that Obamacare actually did something good for this small business owner.  We'll all have to wait and see.  I'm not so sure WHY you're so confident though.  I mean, you do understand that all of these politicians lie right?

don't forget that Obamacare was originally a Republican idea (yes, the mandate part too) and is basically another version of Romneycare

so if it is a huge success and my rates go down you will be sure to correct me if I give the Obama administration all of the credit for helping out a small business owner?

bragging?

merely stating a fact but if you think that's bragging then I guess everyone who are posting negative results are bragging as well

I don't have any personal stake in the fact that rates went down 50% in NYC

the facts appear to be that states that have done a good job of setting up the exchanges (i.e creating a competitive environment) are seeing positive results and those states that didn't do the same are seeing negative results

when i see someone like you defend EVERYTHING obamacare yeah i assume you're one of the lemmings and you have a personal stake in seeing the Obama administation succeed.  when i see someone saying that blue states are doing a better job at setting up these exchanges and you're talking to a guy from Illinois yeah i think you're full of shit.  and now you're throwing out bullshit statistics to defend some dude who doesn't know you.

I guess you didn't see my posts when this thing was being created where I trashed Obama for caving in to both the Repubs and insurance companies

What are the bullshit statistics you think I'm throwing out.  I posted the story from Bloomberg that said the rates would drop by 50% in NYC

Yesterday I posted the story about Florida which talks about how they didn't bother to put any effort at all into setting up the exchanges and that's contributing to their higher rates.

Let me know when you get around to posting some links to support your claims

'Cheapest' ObamaCare Plans Aren't So Cheap After All
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 08/02/2013 | John Merline
Posted on August 3, 2013 6:15:18 AM EDT by IBD editorial writer

The average price for the lowest-cost ObamaCare "bronze" plan in eight states is 122% higher than the cheapest plan currently available in those states, according to an IBD analysis of rate filings and a recent Government Accountability Office report.

The late July report, largely overlooked by the press, provides detailed information on insurance plans today in all 50 states, from the cheapest plans offered to a 30-year-old nonsmoker to the most expensive plans 55-year-old couples can buy.

A separate report from the Maryland insurance department lists the lowest-cost "bronze" plans proposed for ObamaCare exchanges in eight states.

Comparing the two reveals a wide gulf between the cheapest plans available now and those that will be sold next year under ObamaCare.
