At least we both can agree that we are glad you are not in anyway related to me.  That would just be awful.    :D

I assume you would first torture than shoot soldier Che numerous times (this is regarding your second question)

I couldn't smother my child.  If it was our time to die, we are going to die together as a family.

What about the others in the cellar with you?  Are they not as important?

By that rationale, you would rather shoot the soldier-dying on his feet rather than having him be tortured-on his knees.

Is this correct?

I don`t buy it.  If your commanding officer ordered you to get the hell out of there, you would get the hell out of there.

Enemy soldiers have taken over your village. They have orders to kill all remaining civilians. You and some of your townspeople have sought refuge in the cellar of a large house. Outside you hear the voices of soldiers who have come to search the house for valuables.

Your baby begins to cry loudly. You cover his mouth to block the sound. If you remove your hand from his mouth, his crying will summon the attention of the soldiers who will kill you, your child, and the others hiding out in the cellar. To save yourself and the others you must smother your child to death.

Would you smother your child in order to save yourself and the other townspeople?
I would put my baby on the breast and that would silence it.  Problem solved

Your logic doesn't work in the military....I'm sure cowards and their ilk might do what you suggest, but I've never seen it. Join up and your questions will be answered, go 11B ask for combat cohort to Drum Hood or Bragg.

How many stories do you want me to post of Commanding Officers leaving the wounded behind in order to save themselves and/or their unit?

I take it you have never read history?  You may have served in the military but you still have rose tinted glasses on.

You are the leader of a small group of soldiers. You are on your way back from a completed mission deep in enemy territory when one of your men has stepped in a trap set by the enemy and is badly injured. The trap is connected to a radio device that by now has alerted the enemy to your presence. They will soon be on their way.

If the enemy finds your injured man, they will torture him and kill him. He begs you not to leave him behind, but if you try to take him with you your entire group will be captured. The only way to prevent this injured soldier from being tortured is to shoot him yourself.

Would you shoot this soldier in order to prevent him from being tortured by the enemy?

My thoughts. After sitting here thinking about it, I may have to just look the others in the eye and tell them sorry, it's not me who's killing them, and deal with it as it comes.

Wow.  My dad was 82nd airborne in the 50s, my grandfather was a POW during World War II captured by Nazis and my wifes grandfather was a Captain in the Navy in charge of an entire hospital.

All of that means nothing and I have heard and read plenty of stories of leaving wounded behind, especially in Vietnam.  Does the term MIA mean anything to you?  ???

Lets not even bring up the Civil War.  ;)

Missing in Action was mostly Phantom pilots that went down in areas where the NVA got to them before rescue did....or entire squads that got captured or troops separated and grabbed during combat.....tunnel rats that got lost etc.

I've meet Hal Moore he'd blow his brains out if he abandoned a wounded man...and I'm a history minor, with a penchant for russian civil war 1917-1923 formation of the рсфср...also US industrial revolution and WWII.

So I will be happy to review these cases where field officers abandoned wounded to save their own skins...

things are different now. Durinf OIF 1, a Marine was stung up and killed in a major city that wasnt a primary objective. They allocated a massove force to recover the body. We dont leave our dead/wounded behind. Now, things may be different in certain SOF situations that none of use really know about, but I doubt it. If they have to retreat and then come back in force to recover the wounded, they will do that.

Also please don't bring up Soviets during WWII, Stalin stated at the beginning of the war "we don't have POWs we have traitors" effectively denying Russian soldiers the Geneva convention protections. So wounded left behind enemy lines were shot as traitors....other then the Red scum I know of no action or theater where wounded were abandoned.....holland had a field hospital that was cut off and elected not to surrender so wounded fought...

In Somalia two rangers volunteered to hold fire position on a down chopper with wounded until relief arrived....10th mountain didn't get to them in time....never left their post, weren't properly relieved! Two MOH posthumous.

John Masters

During the Second World War, British Army officer John Masters served primarily in Burma fighting the Japanese. In his 1961 memoir, The Road Past Mandalay, he described a wrenching decision he had to make in May 1944 while commanding a brigade in northern Burma that was about to be overrun by a larger Japanese force. His unit had previously cared for and evacuated all of its sick and injured men, through extremely challenging terrain and weather. But now it lacked enough healthy men, horses and mules to safely withdraw all of its wounded: some would have to be left behind. So Masters ordered 19 of those in the worst condition, whom his medical officer judged to be near death, to be put to death immediately rather than abandoned to die of their wounds or at the hands of their captors. All of those men who were still conscious were given morphine before being shot (Masters 1961, 253-4)
