when I was starting out, I was a huge fan of flex. and as a fan, you tend to ignore his faults. I think up until Phil Heath came along, Flex in '99 had some of the best arms bbing had ever seen in. Sure, some are bigger (dillet, mattarazzo, ect... even Ronnie), but IMO Flex had the best combination of size, shape, and separation I'd ever seen, but now I think he's a close 2nd to Phils. (even though i'm not a fan of Phils)..... now, 14years later, you can see how 'thin' flex's back really is and how much he relied on the squiggly-shape of his teres, and how his rhomboids jumped to give the illusion of a huge back.
in '99 I thought he should've won... now, looking back, I don't see how a harder, denser Ronnie could've been placed 2nd to flex with his thinly muscled back and baby soft glutes and hams.
and I really don't even care about the site injections... because out of a 20man ifbb lineup, maybe 2 don't have oil in their delts. and I thought Flex looked great standing relaxed before hitting the pose (not the bbing 'relaxed') with his delts and arms poppin... but not good enough to win the show.
