By the time police and emergency responders got to the Crossfit Mosaic gym in a warehouse district in Winter Garden Monday evening, Millsap was lying facedown on the floor in a pool of blood.
He had no vitals. He was dead before first responders arrived, a heavily-redacted incident report released Wednesday said.
All of the details about how many times and where Millsap was shot were blacked out of the report, but police released a sketch of the suspected gunman.
Officers in their report said that at about 6:45 p.m. Monday, a man walked into the gym in the 900 block of Carter Road near State Road 429 and West Colonial Drive, passed other people who were working out there, shot Millsap and then ran off.
At least one copper shell casing was found at the scene. That is the only piece of physical evidence that police have made public that links the gunman to the shooting, the report indicated.
Millsap's family spent much of Tuesday coming to terms with his shocking death.
His wife, Karen Millsap, took to Facebook Tuesday evening to talk about him and marvel at the outpouring of support from the Crossfit community.
"Thank you everyone," she said in a post on the Crossfit Mosaic Facebook page, which has gotten several hundred more "likes" since Millsap's shooting death Monday evening.
"This is very overwhelming but it's amazing to have such a community of support in crossfit. Richard was the true embodiment of "sleep, eat. (work out of the day)." For him, crossfit meant "getting fit to carry the cross"... and he was perfect when God rested his soul."
Crossfit Mosaic has been open since March 16, according to the gym's website.
Police say Millsap was leading a class of eight people when he was shot.
The witnesses were likely good friends of Millsap's in the close-knit Crossfit community.
Nearly a full page that included the statements of three witnesses was redacted from the report. However, police released the details provided by one person who was sitting on a couch when the suspect walked in.
"The man walked inside with his hands in his pockets," the witness told police.
Investigators said the suspect, wearing a hat and sunglasses, walked past others in the gym, aimed at Millsap and opened fire. The witness raced to a phone to call 911 as the suspect attacked.
One class participant tried to chase the gunman, but the suspect got away, Allen said. The gunman fled in a getaway car driven by a second suspect. Winter Garden police have not yet identified either of the men.
Although those close to the victim said Tuesday that they knew it was their friend that was killed, the Orange-Osceola Medical Examiner's Office did not official confirm his identity until Wednesday morning.
Renaut van der Riet, lead pastor of Mosaic Church, which Millsap attended and named his business after, spent most of Tuesday at the gym and with Millsap's wife, Karen, and two young children, ages 2 and 7.
The family has been through "waves of every emotion you can imagine," the pastor said.
"There is a family left in the wake of devastation because of this insanity," van der Riet added. "It's so unfortunate to watch it unfold. There is a wife at home with two kids that has to rethink her entire life because of a single moment."
Millsap was targeted, police said, but no motive has been released. No one else was injured in the shooting.
Crossfit is an intense workout program that focuses on building strength and endurance by combining weightlifting, aerobic exercises and gymnastics.
