Newt Gingrich: Republicans Rip Obamacare, but Have ‘Zero Answer’ for Alternative

BOSTON – Suggesting the Republican Party should be a party of ideas rather than just attacks, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich told a gathering of GOP operatives that lawmakers who criticize Obamacare but offer no alternatives will be left with “zero answer” for constituents who ask for a policy solution to the president’s health care reform law.

“I would bet for most of you, you go home in the next two weeks while your members of Congress are home and you look at them in the eye and you say, ‘What is your positive replacement for Obamacare?’ and they will have zero answer,” Gingrich told state party chairs, activists, and operatives at the Republican National Committee summer meeting. “We are caught up right now in a culture – and you see it every single day – where as long as we are negative, as long as we are vicious, as long as we can tear down our opponent, we don’t have to worry, so we don’t.

“This is a very deep problem,” he added. “I’m being totally candid with you.”

Gingrich’s message at a luncheon on the first day of the RNC meeting was to stay positive and deliver alternatives to Democratic policy instead of just attacks. He said he will “probably spend the rest of my public life trying to drive this message both in the party, but also, in a broader way, in to the American community.”

that's what i've said - obamacare really sucks donkey balls.

it is a total shit sandwich.  But people without health insurance are hungry.  And for decades, they've been hungry.  And Dems came along with all this exciting advertising "Eat our Shit Sandwich - It's kinda acceptable!"

Repubs could have come out with a ham sandwich, a bologna sandwich, even a mud sandwich - ANY of them would have been better options than a SHIT sandwich.  But they didn't.  And as a result, the ONLY sandwich on the menu - packed with excrement, mind you - was ordered. 

I know, people will just diss newt as being a RINO, soft, etc.  But he's a legit Repub and he was almost the nominee.  He loves america and really knows how congress works like most people don't.

Repubs, in 2017, could heave Prez Cruz lead the charge with something like "AmericaCare" to COMPLETELY end and more importantly, REPLACE obamacare.  But I think repeal is the only cry, and even that might be impossible by then, once everything is implemented.  Sad.

Republicans need only suggest that impediments on competition be removed.  In turn, companies will be forced to compete with each other for customers.  As it stands now, individual insurances companies have territorial monopolies.  Remove those monopolies and create greater competition.

Breaking up legal insurance monopolies was originally included in obamacare bill but a bipartisan group of Repulocrats lobbied to take it out.  I'm sure the money they receive from insurance companies didn't influence their decision at all....
